I am looking for an good oil for my Honda scooter.

The Red Line looks good, 12 viscosity and very high HTHS of 3.6 v.s Mobil 1 of 11 viscosity and HTHS 3.1.

Red Line ester-based, and much more expensive.

So, is Red Line a good choice? better than Mobil 1?

Thank you very much.

The RedLine 10W30 should shear less than the M1 5W30.

I don't know much about scooters, is it like a shared sump motorcycle, where the same oil is used in both the engine and gear box ?

Thank you, Sir.

It is not shared sump, a scooter usually uses seperate oils for engine and transmission.

Why the comparison of a 5w vs 10w unless it is what's available? As a blanket statement the 10w-30 should shear less, in real life use who can tell unless a UOA is done.

Why tun a hths oil in a scooter? If its a regualr run-of-the-mill scooter id assume a basic pennzoil,shell,monil1 5/30 would be just fine.

OK, so less stress on scooter oil than wet-clutch motorcycle oil.

Given it's above 0F (-18 C) in temperature, I would always pick a 10W30 over a 5W30, if all things else are equal (add pack, base stock, price, etc). The 10W30 will shear less and be more stable in viscosity and lower in volatility.

However, I suspect the RedLine would be much higher in price.

In Australia, I would always pick Castrol Edge over M1. They are both full synthetics, but the Edge is much cheaper for me, and according to all the UOA's (used oil analysis) I've seen, the Castrol Edge shears less. Shell Helix is another good brand that is also lower in price than Mobil 1. The 10W40 semi-synthetics with Euro A3/B4 are also good buying here, so are the mineral 15W40 mixed fleet HDEO's (diesel and petrol engine oils). They are usually rated API CJ4 / CI4+ / SL these are good strong oils and usually cheap and easy to find as trucks use them.

I don't know your market, but I suspect you have access to good oils at acceptable prices, without going to the expense of using a rare imported oil like RedLine.

Is it an air cooled scooter? If so I'd never run anything less than a Xw-40. Those things run HOT and really need a thick oil to stay in grade.
