Help please 10W-30 use in hot climates

Please help. I am in Australia and have a Hyundai Getz 1.3 and a Toyota Kluger/Highlander 3.3 V6. I run 10w30 Havoline dino in the Hyundai (5000 miles) and Mobil 1 10w30 in the Toyota (12500 miles). The oil viscosity is recommended for a temperature range -25c to +40c by both car manufacturers, however we have just had a 40c day and it could be a few more summer days even hotter. Do you suggest using a heavier weight oil or stick with 10w30. As an aside at the last Toyota service the oil they would have used had I not provided my own Mobil 1 was Valvoline 15w40 and most readily available oils are of a heavier grade here. Mobil 1 is most common 5W-50.

Congrats on being in such a fine country! My sympathies since you'll be confined to the lubrication leper colony for using "training weight" oil.

I'm sure your 10w30 will do fine ..but feel free to "go native" and use the BIG COUNTRY oil weights.

If you want to have some fun, ask for 5w-20 weight at the local oil outlet.

Roger, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Australia, 40 Celcius, use 20w-50. I suggest Castrol mineral oil, such as GTX. Castrol HD-30, even better.

This question cannot be answered unless we know the kind of use these vehicles are put to.

For short distance commuting and grocery getting, the standard oil is just fine.

For any trips of less than 30 minutes, the standard oil is just fine.

For long distance drives at constant speeds in the 50-80 MPH range, the standard oil is also just fine.

For sitting in traffic idling with 40dC ambients, the standard oil might be a little thin.

For driving the snot out of the car on a race track in 40dC temps, a thicker oil is prefered.

Stick with the Mobil 1 10w30, but start using it in both vehicles. It is an excellent oil.

Your engine will run slightly cooler with a 30 weight. For heat management, it's actually far more important to make sure your engine coolant is fresh and your radiator functioning properly than it is to use a heavier oil.

There have been plenty of BITOGers here who run 30 weights or less during roasting summers in the States, and their engines are fine. To settle your mind on this though, have a used oil analysis done at your next oil change, and look for wear metal readings that might be considered higher than normal.
