Ok i've got a Honda Accord 1997, 4 cyl 2.2, non-v-tec engine. The car currently has 170,000 km (105,600 Miles) on it. As you all can see, i live in montreal and our winters are brutal, tonight is going to be -30 celcius (-22F). I would like to run synthetic oil. I am afraid of doing the transisition from dino to synthetic. I dont want to do AutoRX.

2 Questions
1-should i do it? how?
2-will i feel a driving improvement with synthetic?

I would only do it if I was going to 0W-30.

Esso XD-3 will likely be the most affordable choice.

Do a short change (3000 mi) on the first use and then go to roughly double your current interval.

Yes, you will feel a difference. The engine will run easier when cold. If you put synthetic Dexron-III ATF plus Lubegard Black in your transmission it'll do much better in the cold (or RedLine synthetic gear oil in a manual shift). Synthetic Dexron-III ATF plus Lubegard power steering supplement in your power steering will also ease the load that machinery has to do.

What's the difference in how your car feels to you on a warm day vs. a very cold day?...With synthetics it'll feel much easier to run in the very cold. Do it. When the weather warms, give your car an Auto-Rx cleaning.

Make the switch and don't look back!

If I were you I would use a "true" Synthetic like, Mobil1, Amsoil or German Castrol in a 0w30 viscosity. Since it sounds like you don't want to bother with an engine flush of any kind (and I'm assuming that you do a fair share of city driving), I would limit your drain intervals to no more than 15,000 KMS or about 8 months time. But before going there (if that is your intent) I would do 2 shorter drain intervals, say 8 to 10 thousand KMS each to start with then push it out to the above.

Also as someone else mentioned, using a synthetic fluid in your transmission would also be a great improvement. Once your all converted and see or feel the improvements, you'll ask yourself why you didn't switch sooner?

Go to Mobil1 dotcom . They speak about shorter intervals when first changing over and why . Also they speak about engine seal compatability .

Many here have spoke about Mobils Supersyn seeming ability to clean during the first few intervals and I've heard numerous stories about engines with above 150k changed over successfully w/o any leakage .

I am one of them

Hello:

May i suggest you go get some XD-3 0w30 pronto. It will be a night and day difference, trust me I know first hand about the cold temps you describe. Us in Northwestern Ontario have experienced -40 C to - 45 C all of last week, and that is actual temp, no windchills included there. Using Xd3 0w30 with no block heater in these temps and as soon as crankover happens oil pressure comes right up. Truck seems to warm up fast too. For the price and quality of the oil it will do what no dino in those temps could dream of.
