I have 2 copies of the Mobil 1 Engine Oil Table that shows phosphorus/zinc levels for their synthetic oils. The first, dated 5/27/10, is when most of their oils were rated GF-4 SM. These oils, 0W-20 AFE, 0w30 AFE, 5W-20, 5w30, 5W-20 EP, and 5w30 EP are all listed as 800 phos/900 zinc. Their current table of 10/17/11 now have these above oils rated GF-5 SN. All maintained their previous phos/zinc levels except the 0W-20 AFE and the 0w30 AFE which decreased to 650 phos/750 zinc. Are these 0W oils now inferior to the other grades?

So far I have a no and a yes. Tomorrow I will call Mobil, talk to Matt, if he is still there, and see what they say. I will report what they say.

With short oil change, amount of Zn, P doenst matter, right?
Anyway those are very hi fuel conserving so different formula.

There are many threads on the decrease in Zn and Phos to meet the API SN certification and just as many opinions. If you determine that your application requires more Zn and Phos than the SN formulation you can always create a blend such as the Caterham blend.

Just a guess but Matt is going to say the product improved, heck he might even toss in some tech talk to make it sound better. If he says its worse and they monitor calls Matt will be looking for a job. LOL Either way report back.

All kidding aside. I just bought a ton of AFE and plan to be sticking with it for quite a while. IMO it is one of their better oils based on my reading.

If you think you need the ZN and Phosphorus you can always buy Redline Break In Oil additive and tweak your oil.

No. AFE oils are on par with the EP line and contain slightly higher quality base oils than regular Mobil 1. ZDP is just one form of anti-wear additive. Using ZDP levels to determine oil quality is meaningless.

If they lowered the zddp to accommodate for the SN spec I will assume they added some type of friction modifier to compensate for the reduction.
I may not like mobil but I do think they make a decent product
