Help me trust titanium

Hey everyone.

So I have never used an oil that features titanium before. For some reason the idea of it scares me off and I'm trying to correct that through education. I completely trust traditional moly-based add packs but I can't get past the fact that titanium seems like a cheaper replacement for moly, and I have concerns about it being as good because I have no experience with it.

My concern also stems from the fact that VOA from PQIA show that (for example) Mobil Super 5000 only has 33 ppm of titanium. How is any additive that effective with only 33 ppm? I mean I believe in the ExxonMobil chemists but can somebody help educate me as to why titanium is only required in such low numbers?

Lastly, I have read that it's possible that titanium may form a sacrificial boundary layer more quickly and at a lower temperature than moly does. Is this true? Because if it is then that sounds potentially very beneficial to me as my vehicle takes tons of short trips. I'd really love some insight on this because it seems to be mentioned here but I haven't seen any concrete evidence out there.

I know there are members here that can answer these questions and any help is appreciated. This site is an amazing resource.
 
Well castrol's top shelf oils are the titanium line in the gold bottles which tells me something.
And the 33ppm titanium that you see in the Mobil offering is obviously enough to do the job.
First off why would you just naturally assume its not enough. We've seen many times that oils will lower moly levels outperform oils with higher moly levels because its the type of moly that matters,and the oil company has balanced the additive package so that all the adds work synergistically together,so less is more.
Look at the used oil analysis with the titanium oils. They all show good wear numbers.
Oil companies will use different ingredients to achieve a finished product,so are you an expert in the field and are able to question the performance of these ingredients.
Use a moly oil then. No biggie. I'm sure if these titanium oils were in some way deficient we'd have seen or heard something by now.
Especially here at bitog. We obsess over a few ppm iron. If the titanium adds increased wear metals in any way we'd have countless threads on it by now.
 
It's not just the Ti or just the moly... its the whole add pack.
My DD, I just dumped out my 2nd fill of Kendall GT-1 full synthetic. Previous to Kendall, and current fill is PP. I can't notice any difference.
Other two vehicles, one on Mobil Super 5000, think it was Mobil clean or super, something like before. Other vehicle, was QS GTX, now Mobil Super 5000.
I sure can't tell any difference, except its easier to find the PP and Mobil Super 5000 locally. I was lucky to run into a vendor that had a case of the Kendall to give it a try for a couple fills. Just hard to find locally, but can be ordered online should one wish to.
Haven't read all, but what used oil analysis Ive seen on Ti users were positive, hence my 2-fill try using the Kendall.
Our local Firestone uses Kendall products, but my DD has a TSB regards to aftermarket filter & noise and they won't use my OEM filter I obtained from the dealer, or any customer supplied parts. I'll hit Amazon for OEM filters next when my filter stash gets low.
Think I seen a taxi engine tear-down video pressing how well/clean it did using Kendall at something like after 100k service.
add - my understanding is Ti oils layer up faster/sooner than moly.

Ti is a patented friction modifier like Mo. Kendall, Mobil, and BP use it. It is shown in UOA with beter result. I just changed my Explorer with Kendall GT-1 blend, good for another 5k.

When my stash of Ultra is gone, I will be switching to Kendall. I have not decided which to go with the blend or full synthetic. The Pentastar is very easy on oil.
