So I have never used an oil that features titanium before. For some reason the idea of it scares me off and I'm trying to correct that through education. I completely trust traditional moly-based add packs but I can't get past the fact that titanium seems like a cheaper replacement for moly, and I have concerns about it being as good because I have no experience with it.
My concern also stems from the fact that VOA from PQIA show that (for example) Mobil Super 5000 only has 33 ppm of titanium. How is any additive that effective with only 33 ppm? I mean I believe in the ExxonMobil chemists but can somebody help educate me as to why titanium is only required in such low numbers?
Lastly, I have read that it's possible that titanium may form a sacrificial boundary layer more quickly and at a lower temperature than moly does. Is this true? Because if it is then that sounds potentially very beneficial to me as my vehicle takes tons of short trips. I'd really love some insight on this because it seems to be mentioned here but I haven't seen any concrete evidence out there.
