I recently picked up a 2006 Z06 with only 1100 miles on her. I am planning to drop the oil soon. I previously had a 1998 C5 LS1 and annually changed the RedLine oil. This was a car that saw short city drives always getting to temp. with 2-3000 on th oil at change. I had absolutely ZERO problems and am ready to continue w/ RedLine 5w30.

My questioning of this oil is due to the talk about seal leak(softening) with High Ester oils, and those vehicles that may see few miles. Please help with this decision. I am open to all suggestions.

I thank you in advance!!!

Redline is a great oil, however I wouldn't recommend using it on a new car since it's not on GM's recommended list for the Corvette. You'll want to choose one of the following oils in order to be sure you won't be denied warranty coverage:

I would choose Pennzoil Platinum, as it's shown very consistent oil analysis results so far.

Thanks Patman...I did notice that Amsoil AFL mentions GM4718M on the label so is this a mistake, deleted from GMs list?

So would M1 EP be a better choice over PP if I HAD to stay with the above list? I do appreciate your input!!!

I would use PP or M1. If you can find Havoline Synthetic, I'd also consider that as well.

Doesn't that car come spec'd with M1?. I imagine that it would be fine with reasonable OCI's.

There are a lot of great A3 rated oils out there too, but they may not be on GM's list of recommended oils.

Patman screws around with 'Vettes a lot so he has a good grip on what works well with them.

Good luck with you're new car and be careful...they are incredably fast!!

I would definitely stick with the list and even though I like Redline and use it in my motorcycles...Patman is 100% correct about the GM list and possible warranty denial. I only use PP or M-1 in my GM trucks until the warranty is over for the same reason.

First off, congrats on purchasing one of the BEST "bang for the buck" rides out there!!

The others have it right, you cannot go wrong with the PennzPlat if you are worried about the list and the warranty. But the seals on your LS7 are not that radically different than your previous LS1 (IF at all). So therefore if and when you decide to use RL again, there should be NO problem, just like before.
Do you plan on open tracking/HPDE/road racing the Z06 at all? If so, then I probably would just go to the RL, at least for those sessions.
Are you on Corvette Forums at all? If so then I don't have to tell you how quick these things can get down the 1/4 mile BONE FREAKING STOCK (for the others who either don't know, or don't believe/concieve that GM is capable of this, some have gone 11.2x @ 129.xx mph)!!!! Yes, be CAREFUL!
Anyway, it's nice to see some supreme ALL AMERICAN muscle in our area. GOOD LUCK!

Since you did not mention any track time or auto cross events I do not think Redline is going to do much for you! I like Redline and do not have a problem with you useing it since I have never had seal issues with it ever.Seeing how you only get about 3000 miles a year on this car I would use an over the counter synthetic lik M1,M1EP,Penzoil Platnium etc......On a daily driver Redline is great but I wounder if it is the best choice for a car that sits a lot! Ester based oil can by hydroscopic and with all of the sitting this car does that worries me a bit!

When I worked for GM I helped a lot of COrvette guys maintain and restore old Corvettes. About 30%-40% of these guys were running Redline oils and gear lubes with no issues at all.

M1 EP is not GM 4718, nor is any Amsoil product. This is the meets/exceeds wordplay. Meets is one thing, exceeds is another.

While Amsoil is an excellent oil, technically, it does not MEET the requirement. You can call them and verify this.

You can not go wrong with Patman's rec. on the Pennzoil. I prefer something a little more viscous. Especially if you like to run at high R's.

You do bring up a GOOD point here

. But, do we know just how much of the basestock IS actually ester?? Also, someone, somewhere has mentioned that RL has addressed this issue with add pack compounds (NOT sure on this, just asking)?

Do you think that GM would be picky about a warranty claim with this car. I'll bet they have had a few. Patman has the right idea. Stick to the rules, and maybe change the oil a little more often than required. With all this talk about spec oils, what about the oil filter?

Since these guys are saying Penn. Plat., I would stock up considering it's buy one get one free at Advnace Auto.

If you use an AC Delco filter you would have nothing to worry about. But then again I have not seen a spec for oil filter on an GM model.

Just to play it safe, I would probably stick with the AC Delco oil filter as well, especially in Canada, since our AC Delco filters are made by Dana anyhow, and use the same filtering media as the Wix, NAPA Gold and Carquest Premium. They don't get the silicone ADBV though.

I do appreciate all of your input( and compliments on this vehicle). I do not plan to rally or autocross, just enjoying it on the street. I am leaning toward PP over the regular M1 as this will keep me straight with th GM4718M req. and a stock PF48(not sure ???). I'm not trying to be lazy or cheap but doing an oil/filter change annually will still be okay with the above mentioned oils? Thanks again for your input, I do appreciate this!!!!

Do you plan on running it hard? If so stick with Redline, if not - then any synth oil should meet your needs.

The PennzPlat WILL stand up to autocross anyway (IF you decide to try one). It just will be pushed/stressed IF you open track/road race/HPDE the mighty LS7. For easy, street use you CANNOT go wrong with the PennzPlat and Delco filter. If it were my LS7 though, I would think about using an Amsoil EaO oil filter, and even an EaA air (IF they make one yet/ever for this app.), just for peace of mind, if nothing else. That IS at least an $15K engine, you know!!
