One thing about the Mazda's I've seen, the interior doesn't hold up very well. I've been impressed with my Honda's. The 02 has 155K on it and the interior has been great along with the engine. Not burning oil and still runs great. The 06, man, I tell you, I just look forward to driving it.

I don't think the Mazda interior even starts out nice. I just bought an Acura after looking at Mazda threes and sixes. The cheesy interior was the biggest detraction (except for a flat spot in the throttle response). Mazdas do seem to be a lot of car for the money, however.
As for the Acura, yes, I do look forward to driving it!

Well, if you want interior "niceness", look no further than an Audi. They know how to do an interior. An A6 spanks the TL in that area.
I don't know why you'd compare a Mazda to an Acura. They're not supposed to be equal in content or class. There's not one Acura you can buy for $17K, while a Mazda 6i was designed to fit into that price point. Mazda, Honda and Toyota are a fair comparison to one another, just like Acura, Lexus and Infiniti. But if interior quality takes more priority than price, Audi is the way to go.
CBD - I believe I pre-addressed your point by saying that Mazda offers a lot of car for the money.
However, even within your comparison (vs Honda and Toyota) the Mazda suffers. The interior materials were worse than the utilitarian Tacoma it was to replace.

I get between 26-30 with the 2ZZ on premium. The 1ZZ in the base and XR gets something like 35 highway. The replacement 2ZRFE is estimated at 28-33. It's too early to tell with my new Scion xD with that engine as we are still on the first tank of gas (we bought it Nov 6th).
