The Insight was pretty revolutionary for Honda back in their day - it had a lot of trickle-down from the NSX. It was built alongside of it as well in Tochigi, Japan. It was one of the first affordable aluminum-chassis cars outside of the Audi and of course the NSX.
The Prius was the more successful hybrid - the Insight just had too many compromises.

I didn't really find the styling all that new. I remember in the late 90s I went to my cousin's wedding in SoCal. A friend of her's (I knew her because we went to the same college) drove over in her mom's car. Her mom worked for Southern California Edison and got some special deal where they've paid most of the lease for a GM EV1. I didn't get to ride in it, but I did sit in the passenger seat. It was also somewhat annoying in that it had a backup beep like a delivery truck. It was dead quiet though at slow speeds. Of course there aren't any left on the road since GM took back all of them and relegated a few to museums with the powertrains removed.
