Hello,
Ive just picked up my first diesel, a 2.4 twin turbo Mitsubishi motor called the 4n16. Im in Australia and the model is called Triton ute.
Looking in the manual at oils, it recommends oil that meets ACEA C1, C2, C3 Or C4 along with JASO DL1.
Im wondering what a good oil choice would be? Im trying to learn what the different grades mean but Im somewhat unsure.
The local Mitsubishi dealer use Castrol Edge OE-X 5W-30 - it is C3 but not Jaso DL1.
Can anyone suggest a good oil for use in Australia?
The OCI is listed as 15000km
Cheers for any help,
Drew

jaso dl1 is just a basic light duty diesel spec and light duty diesel oils are usually gasoline dual rated so because of that a lot of 30/40 grade euro oils spec for diesel.

A more common equivalent would be something with the bmw ll-04, VW 507, and mercedes 229.3/229.5 as those are also a light duty diesel spec oils. And a lot of these carry the newer c3 and c2. I don't think I've seen anything with c1 anymore, I think that's long dead by now. But you can honestly just use whatever 5/10w-30 hdeo and 15w-40 at least in the hotter half of the year.

Personally if that was my engine I'd just run 15w-40 like I already do in my other trucks but I'd change it more frequently given that's a twin turbo and I wouldn't leave anything to chance with extended drains.

The second PDF on the ACEA website here has a pretty good description of the requirements:

JASO here, although there are other sources:

Thanks very much for all thar information, a big help. Those links are great!
I also had a play with the Lubrizol comparison spider tool, which helped.
I'll try to find a good C3 with Poreche C30, bmw ll-04, VW 507, and mercedes 229.3/229.5. There's a few choices here in Australia - Penrite C3 looks ok https://penriteoil.com.au/products/enviro-c3-5w-30-full-syn
Also Shell Ultra C3 https://www.shell.com.au/motorists/...synthetic/shell-helix-ultra-ect-c3-5w-30.html

Anyone tried the Nulon C3 apex? https://www.nulon.com.au/products/engine-oils/apex-plus/apx5w30c3

I’d use the Shell 0w-30 C2/C3 or the 5w-30 C3. Great list of approvals at an excellent price.

One thing to watch with Penrite is they don’t actually have the approvals, but say they meet the requirements of.

On the other hand, ACEA Sequences are not approvals so “meets and exceeds” or similar is appropriate language for them.

Some blenders or manufacturers are careless when having actual approvals such as Castrol does. I call it reverse obfuscation since they do actually have the approval but make it seem as they don’t. For the Penrite products have you looked at any of the approval lists to see if they are on there?

Yeah I was referring to the manufacturer ones rather than the ACEA Sequences with my comments. They’re definitely not on the MB or VW lists last time I looked.

Nulon APEX+ Multi 23 5W-30 is really good stuff. I’d run that with confidence in your Triton. C2 and C3, MB 229.52 etc. and good value/often on sale. Made in Australia too

Does it have Mercedes-Benz 229.52 approval?
It is not on Mercedes’ list, however it is the same exact formula as Fuchs Titan GT-1 Flex 23 5W-30 which is MB 229.52 approved. The Nulon is just the Fuchs product in a different bottle, so I see that as close enough to ‘approved’.

Right.

Plus, this is going in a Mitsubishi which only calls for ACEA/JASO specs., no approvals necessary. So there’s zero warranty implications using the stuff i recommended.
Which is fine. You’re correct in what you say. You’re the one who brought up the approval.

OP,
for your diesel engine you need a mid to low SAPS (sulphated ash or SA%) oil. Both C2 and C3 are SA% <= 0.8%.
(For comparison the full SAPS A3/B4 oils are typically around 1.2%). The difference between C2 and C3 is the HTHS, with C2 requiring >= 2.9 cP while C3 requires >= 3.5 cP. Obviously if it's above 3.5 cP (C3) then it's also above 2.9 cP (C2) so a thicker oil can claim both, but a thinner oil will only be C2. Now if C2 only oil is enough for your car (2.9 cP) and I think it is. Then running a C2 and C3 oil (3.5 cP) is the performance solution.

A good choice is that Shell Ultra ECT 0W30 you mentioned. It's a full GTL synthetic with ACEA C2 and C3 plus VW 504/507 and MB 229.51/.52 and Porsche C30. Those are some very tough OEM specs.
