A while back I saw a post with a heat exchanger that spins on in front of the oil filter and connected to the vehicle water supply. I have looked and cannot find such an item. Honestly, I don't know the proper name and have gotten back mostly home or commercial returns when typeing "heat exchanger" in a search engine. Where on the web, other than ebay(another story) can I obtain a unit such as I have described?

Thanks.

If you open the search function, and search for posts by "Gary Allan", you should find it.

I had saved the post by Gary from a while back. I did a search on the internet, at Summit Racing and at Jegs and came up empty. I liked the look of the one that Gary got off ebay and wanted to try something like that to decrease the oil warm-up time in winter and to cool the oil in summer. Maybe the latter would be more usefull to me as I live in Louisiana.

Gary, it is for a 2002 Land Rover Discovery, 4.0L V8. As you may know that is an all aluminum engine, save for cast cylinder liners, and I try to take the absolute best care possible on a day-to-day basis. I run Redline 5W40 and recently did my first UOA, but don't have the results back yet.

I abuse the little V8 by off-roading it pretty hard 5-6 times per year. In between I baby it. My normal drive to work takes only 11-12 minutes and it only sees longer trips on the weekends. Essentially the oil only reaches operating temps on the weekend so I thought the heat exchanger would help that. And I remembered that I off-roaded heavily in July and August last year and can only imagine what the oil temps were then. I know the Redline is "insurance" against oil related failures, just thought I'd add one more small piece of insurance.

Thanks.

You're in luck. You take a Ford/Mopar filter.

If you're commited to buying new, take a trip to the nearest DC dealer and ask the parts man to look up various 05 vehicles with the heavy duty towing package. I believe the Grand Caravan will be one of them. The retail is about $98 and the trade price is about $76. The nipples for the heater hose may vary from model to model, so ask to look at the visual display to see what will work the best for you.

You need a full-time/bypass heater circuit. If you have a heater control valve, you'll need to rig a T in the heater line. Simple brass hose barbs of the appropriate size and a couple of threaded tee's will work there. This works when one hose is a 5/8" and the other is 3/4".

Good luck!
