My bird spent the first seven years of his life in the kitchen/dining area. Now he's in my fourth bedroom that I use as an office. I'm not sure if any attention was paid to this topic from 1989-1996, but he survived.
Honestly, though, I have read in a number of publications that you should not keep birds in areas where cooking is done because the varying smells stress them. Also, just like the people who can smoke a pack or more a day and live to a ripe old age, some are just hardier than others.
