Just got back from the "household chemical recycling event" in my area.

Had the most nasty crap known to mankind, and they took it ALL!! Catalyzed automotive paint. Old motorcycle batteries. Toxic yard chemicals. Sulfuric acid drain cleaner. HCl containers. Containers leaking, and labels corroded to the point of illegibility.

They make you stay in the car. Drive in, pop the trunk, and the crew grabs the boxes. 10 seconds after showing up, they slammed my trunk and said thanks, good to go!! I half way expected them to turn me away. Anyway, I'm giddy and just wanted to share!

For as many dislikes I have about Illinois, one thing they do right is have household hazardous waste program with 5 permanent collection sites in addition to the one-day events. One of the permanent sites is within a reasonable drive of my house so I can change the oil on Saturday and drop it off on Sunday.

Do you happen to have a website? I've got three car batteries and loads of old oil I'm trying to get rid of.

This is an "event" ? As strict as California is, I'd think they'd encourage proper disposal of things and make it easier (and frequent). In my county, I can do this every Tuesday at their waste site.

My county has collection sites, but they're for specific locations in the county, and each one requires proof of residence in those areas. A driver license address will do. We also have one place that's open once a week for an even smaller subset of the county, although I think that's paid for by each municipal government and not the county.

The first time I tried dumping hazardous stuff, I had it in the trunk in a big tote for a big, scheduled event (reservation required) in the parking lot of a home improvement store. But I also had a sealed case of Pennzoil 5W-30 and the guy grabbing the waste joking asking if I was unloading brand new motor oil.

Our county has sites open 5 days a week. They finally started accepting smoke alarms now. It's pretty nice just showing up, popping the trunk open and leaving in like 2 minutes.
