That's a good question!

And, to get a good answer, you'll probably have to fire-off an e-mail to Chevron.

Seems to me Chevron is implying that the synthetic formulation of base oils & additives is so good that it does not need an additional deposit protection additive.

But the conventional base oils need it to help keep the engine clean?

- A bit of a confused marketing message!

Has anyone actually determined if this mysterious substance known as Deposit Shield actually exists? Is there a vial sitting in the lab marked "Deposit Shield-Top Secret" that gets poured into each batch? Or is it a marketing term describing the hoped for effect of the new formulation? The much anticipated VOA pretty much turned into a tempest in a teapot. It showed a little less moly (GASP!) and a little more calcium. Maybe it's just a reason for the corporate meanies to raise prices to keep those pesky Chevron shareholders happy.
