I called Havoline and they said next month they are rolling out a 5w-20 Synthetic Oil. FYI. The 5w-20 GF-4 oil currently, is a group II.

But in reality is a Group III going to be that much better than their current Group II "dino" oil for probably 2 to 3 times as much? Or are they bringing out a 100% true synthetic oil? Even then if you don't change your oil every 10,000 miles will their "synthetic" oil really be better? After all their dino seems to produce great results in 5,000+ mile range. Perhaps it's due to a great additive package to help the Group II base oil. I use to be a 100% synthetic fan but with the advent of the new and "improved" dino and dino blend oils I'm now a serious user of Motorcraft 5W-20 in my 2002 F-150 w/the 4.6 and my wife's 2005 Explorer w/the 4.6. We go to around 5,000 miles guilt free oil changes. UOA's indicate this is more than adequate for the type of driving being done.

The current 5w-20 SM Havoline is a great oil. Flash point is somehow 460F. The specs on their synthetics look great also. 496F and 5% Noak for the 10w30.

It's ChevronTexaco and ConnocoPhillips. I don't think Chevron and Phillips have any connection.

I'm not a 5W-20 convert yet. I like a little more protection please. Even a 5w30 will give you a little more wear-time when oil contamination from fuel or antifreeze happens to creep in... sometimes comes in slowly - sometimes fast & overnight.

The blended or 'dino' 5w20's like Havoline and Motorcraft have shown such good results here that I personally don't see the need for a much more expensive full syn 5w20. Extended drains would be the exception.

Group II or II+ baseoils?

BTW, I can't get the Chevron Group II base oil link to come up, I thought the Chevron 5R base oil available for 5W oils was 118 VI.

Chevron considers Grp III to meet the synthetic definition.

But this certainly would be an opportunity for Chevron to add ChevronPhillips PAO to the formulation!

Actually, the correct spelling is ConocoPhillips.

And CP Chem or Chevron Phillips Chemical is a very active supplier of PAO base oils.
