Have you been driving and heard another car or truck going down the road and its the motor you are hearing?? I've had this happen a number of times in the last several years. I had this World Champion going down the interstate and I could hear his hoopty car making all kinds of noise from the motor. I was going my typical 79 mph in a 70. And I ran him down from a long distance in a relatively short short period of time. This World Champion speeds up as we both catch an 18 wheeler. He cuts right behind me. I'm thinking that this World Champion's car is just about to blow up trying to keep up with me. Sure enough, after about 2 miles he gave up trying to keep up with me and slowed way back down to probably 70 mph. I easily pulled away from that champion.

One a very cold morning in January 2015 with temps around 0°F I could easily hear some other vehicles running with loud motors. There were actually a surprising number of them that I heard that morning. I was driving around trying to get my lady's Camry really warmed up for her so she wouldn't have to get into a very cold car. So, when she got into her car it had full hot heat going. Anyhow, have you all ever noticed this phenomenon as well?? Definitely makes you think to yourself that some of these other car's motors are on their last legs so to speak.

Plenty of times. I have lost count of how many F150s and Expeditions with 3V 5.4L V8 I have heard that sound like they are eating themselves apart. Same with 4.0L SOHC Explorers, they start and the grinding from the timing cassettes makes me cringe.

Yeah those can be loud. I was driving my dad's Duramax and pulled up to a gas station and the F150 was WAY louder than the Duramax. Have heard it many times before.

The sad part is the people drive them and are completely oblivious. I feel bad when someone asks me what is wrong with their car and I hear something like that. I just say "uh you should really have it looked at." saves me from having to give the truck a death sentence. A couple times I have thought of telling them how much it normally costs, then offer then like $1,000 for their 2007 F150 4X4 so I can fix it for myself.

Yesterday evening I was walking from the Home Depot parking lot over to PartSource, and this late-model Land Rover drove by with what sounded like an incredibly bad bottom end knock - either a rod or main bearing. I almost didn't expect it to make it out onto the main road.

I remember that awful pinging from the high-geared, under-powered smog boats of the 1980s. Quiet exhaust really made the ping stand out.

Yesterday, I was next to a knocking Jeep SUV product in traffic. It must have had a rod knock or a really bad lifter.

Come to think of it, my Chevy 5.3 is getting a little loud for the first block or so on cool mornings.

For me its motorcycle chains that I tend to notice.

I've seen them so loose that you can hear them whipping through the air as they ride past, and when I look at them, I expect them to fly off any minute. They ride must be very jerky too.

I saw one in the parking lot, been moved at low speeds by the rider. It was very rusty, you could see the rust from meters away, and the squeaking as it rolled past made it sound like an old farm gate that had rusted stiff. How can you not just bend over and put a dab of oil on that chain ?, it would only take 30 seconds to make a big improvement.

The "World Champions" I speak of are meant in a facetious manner. The meaning is to be the polar opposite of the phrase used. I call people "winners" too. And trust me those cats are nothing close resembling anything to do with winning.

I was being a tad facetious myself.

To me its the people in back of me at drive throughs. For a minute I think its my car with all the racket.

Sometimes in a drive thru I hear a noise, then I turn my car off. The noise is always from the car infront of me.

Raises my Toyota ownership ego up a little each time

Hey Nick1994 I have to say that the lady's Camry is much quieter on the Motorcraft 5w30 then anything else I have run in it. I would also add that poor gas quality makes the car have that ticking noise even while cruising. Cheap Wawa gas will definitely do that. I got irritated with how the car sounded when I changed the oil in in 2 weeks ago. I put some good Shell gas in it and it ran much quieter than it had been.

I haven't noticed a difference in sound with oil with my Camry. Or any car actually. I have noticed that it is down on power in the mountains with gas from a local Circle K gas station. I usually use Arco or Valero and they're always fine as far as power when I've taken it out of town.

People with loud cars want to be noticed. It's like "Hey, look at me, I'm special."

I judge people's intelligence by the loudness of their cars; the louder their car, the stupider they are.

I have one in the ship right now.

2006 VW Passat 2.0T. The Follower on the high pressure fuel pump has eaten itself and the cam lobe. The short chain that drives the intake cam is also thrashing about inside making for some interesting noises.

This same car had Wal Mart TLE installed 5w-20 in it too. When I called the owner about it, she said that the guy she bought it from (sounds like a shady small used sales lot) had been doing it until Wal Mart did and that he probably knew what to put in?

As an aside, I wondered why they put 5w-20 in, until I looked at the appropriate spec- 502.00. I bet someone glanced sideways at it and saw/assumed 5w-20?
