Have you ever had a leak after an oil change?

For whatever reason, on my wife's 2016 Mazda CX-5 the oil filter gasket always sticks to the block when you take the filter off. Every time. No matter how much I clean the block surface, smear fresh oil on the filter gasket, etc.

Once I was in a rush and thought the gasket came off with the filter but it didn't. Installed the new filter, double gaskets.... big mess.

For these reasons I've always started up the car, let it run for a few seconds and take a look underneath to make sure no whoopsies.
I use silicone grease instead of oil on the gasket. Never sticks.

Middle of winter now, but just noticed some new oil spots in my driveway... that weren't there a week ago. Am guessing I didn't get the drain plug tight enough, which is odd, it was fine for a month or two. Guess tonight I'll get to roll around in the dark looking at this. [Not my fault--bolt threads is goobbered up--MIL had umpteen oil changes done by who knows who. So it really takes a good unga-dunga to tighten now.]

Checking for leaks feels mostly like a formality to me
You're a madman if you don't do it.

Fresh out of school in 1991, I was changing the oil in a sideways engine Citation with a brand new engine at a shop, my first job out of school, starting pay $1500 a month, adjust that for inflation... Started the engine, and oil went everywhere. It was a hard filter to change - **** you GM - through the pass side wheel well, and you coudn't see in there that well.

It near blew all the out from the engine because the filter was "double gasketed, leaked between gaskets. The reason way was the brand new engine, fresh spray paint cause the filter ring to glue itself to the block, something to always look for, did the gasket stay with the filter.

Later working at Ryder Truck, we called this the "Super Flush", I can remember a "tech" doing it right in front of the boss's office, on a Peterbilt, a lot of oil on the floor, a lot of kitty litter...
