I have to wonder where this "modern technology" is getting us. The headlights on my '86 Volvo were generic rectangular seal beams. Not as bight as LEDs but cheap as anything and dead easy to replace.
I replaced the large round hi/low seal beams on my '78 Fiesta with brand name halogen units (with replaceable bulbs). They weren't cheap by any means but no-where near the cost of today's highly styled headlight assemblies. And they were plenty bright.
When tail lights burned out, a 30 cent bulb used to get them going again. Those bulbs soared in price over the years to as much as a couple of bucks. The tail light unit (which you replace as a unit) on my Tesla was around $500 (replaced under warranty due to water collection).
I have LED units in two of our home's bathrooms. The first one, which was quite an expensive unit, failed just outside the 5 year warranty. The second less expensive one made it to 8 or 9 years. It could have been repaired, but for about 90% of the cost of a replacement (which was +/- $100). The helpful clerk at the retailer said that the life expectancy of these essentially non-repairable lighting units is about 10 years. You don't replace bulbs any more, you replace the unit.
All this is progress - how?
