Good day folks. Brother and myself used my truck and double axle trailer for taking old engine blocks, plate steel and others to metals place. Definitely not getting rich. Took us 4 pickup loads with almost 1,900lbs to get $400~

Better than nothing. Discovered brass rads and copper and bronze too. Late dad was a huge hoarder or pack rat.

There were a couple of guys down by my shop (in a commercial storage unit) who scrap. I just don’t see how they make any money at it. I love having them around - I throw old brake rotors and other parts in the pick-up that Darryl keeps two doors down. Super convenient for me, but I can’t imagine it’s much of a net profit for him when he makes a run.

I’ve got a blown Volvo engine that I will need to scrap - I’ll ask Darryl about that when the time comes…

In the meantime - I always have a cold drink for him when he comes by, or a spare fuse, bolt, can of brake clean, whatever he needs.

It wasn’t great but we got money. Lot of the heavier plate steel square tubing and L-channel I took back to practice forging with on new to me coal forge. Heavy stuff they gave us #1 prepared. Some #2 prepared and rest was shredder. #1 prepared was only $7~ per hundred. Aluminum cans were 30 cents.

Plate steel? What size? Sounds to me you should have advertised that on CL or FM and would have likely got much more for it all.
Engine blocks? so what were they? In what sort of condition? Way too much good rare stuff is scrapped.

Scrap cars, low prices? Just go buy a small piece of round steel, and you will see how keeping axles and sway bars etc is the thing to do.
Scrapping is just stupid.
If a person see's something they want at that scrap yard they will likely pay 2 to 4 times what the yard gave for it.

You make a fair point about hanging on to stuff. But then you get old, die and someone has to deal with your stuff.

Getting rid of junk isn't stupid. It's smart. Especially when you are older and have plenty of everything.

I was working on the front lawn the other day, when a scrap dealer stopped by, after seeing an old water heater sitting by my trash cans up the driveway. I've been lazy about calling the city for a special pickup. Anyway, dude took it away for me, much to my pleasure. To sweeten the deal for him (and me), I dug up a nice big bag of aluminum cans for him. Ha ha. Win Win!

Is there a local place that pays better for aluminum or are aluminum wholesale prices down? At one point aluminum cans were. 65-.75 cents per pound.

Pull n pay has significantly raised prices across the board in the last month or so. Back in June their website listed a headlight housing as $99. I went in July and a couple of guys had a wheelbarrow full of stuff. They told me that headlight assemblys without the bulb are now $198 per side.

I have to wonder where this "modern technology" is getting us. The headlights on my '86 Volvo were generic rectangular seal beams. Not as bight as LEDs but cheap as anything and dead easy to replace.

I replaced the large round hi/low seal beams on my '78 Fiesta with brand name halogen units (with replaceable bulbs). They weren't cheap by any means but no-where near the cost of today's highly styled headlight assemblies. And they were plenty bright.

When tail lights burned out, a 30 cent bulb used to get them going again. Those bulbs soared in price over the years to as much as a couple of bucks. The tail light unit (which you replace as a unit) on my Tesla was around $500 (replaced under warranty due to water collection).

I have LED units in two of our home's bathrooms. The first one, which was quite an expensive unit, failed just outside the 5 year warranty. The second less expensive one made it to 8 or 9 years. It could have been repaired, but for about 90% of the cost of a replacement (which was +/- $100). The helpful clerk at the retailer said that the life expectancy of these essentially non-repairable lighting units is about 10 years. You don't replace bulbs any more, you replace the unit.

All this is progress - how?

Get old and what? I got a more positive attitude about that. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah stuff, and family's kids etc, the best way is an auction, get everyone to compete for the junk.:ROFLMAO:
