A friend is considering buying an '06 Chevy Malibu with a V-6 engine, and asked for my opinion. I told her about the problem that they have had with the IMGs on their V-6s, but I didn't know if they have fixed the problem or not. Does anybody out there know if GM has gotten rid of the crappy gaskets yet or not?

Yes they have. They've gone to a metal framed gasket for both upper and lower intake manifolds. They've also fixed the issue of the EGR melting the UIM.
Yes - starting model year 2000 all makes with the 3800 Series II. I'm not sure about the 3100/3400 though.
Which V6 is your friend getting in his Malibu? You can get a 3.5L V6 which I think is the latest version of the 3.1-3.4 Chevy V6 or if you select the Malibu SS, the 3.9L V6 which I think is the latest version of the 3.8 L Buick V6, aka series 3800. From what was posted above, the 3.9 L V6 may have been upgraded. It is not clear about the more common 3.5L V6 found in most Malibu's.
I believe the 3.1 , 3.4 and then 3.5 got new gaskets in 2002/3. I really don't see evidence one way or the other that it's a fix that works but it is similar to repair fixer gaskets and uses different torque values in the recommended fix for 60 degree V6 GMs.
Not to hijack this thread, but I need to replace my Intake Manifold Gasket on my 97 Malibu. This will be the 3rd time. The mechanic is saying he will use a Velcro gasket. At least it sounded like Velcro. Anyway, he says that they are better than the replacement ones from GM.

With a Velcro gasket you don't need to use the bolts
He probably meant Fel-Pro which is a company that makes gaskets.

How many miles? the first installation was at 62838, the second one was actually replace under warranty at 65327. The car right now has 84,000.

For the 60 degree engines, use the FelPro Perma Dry metal framed LIM gaskets, and new LIM bolts. Use new recommended torque Proceedures and sequences. "The Right Stuff" gasket maker for the end seals.
Done right, these engines are O.K.

I KNOW the 2000 model year 3800 did not have the intake gaskets fixed. I think GM started using the metal framed gaskets in 2003 or 2004. They did redesign the EGR inlet in the UIM for 2000, I believe, but it didn't fix the problem, only made it slightly less common.
If that's the case, then I'm hoping the guy I bought the car from had it done already.
