My son is in the final stages of selling his F-250 to Carvana . Man , this has been an ordeal . They make it sound so easy on TV . He still owed some on the truck so obviously that complicated things . He probably could have sold it on the open market but he's in the Police Academy and he does not have access to a phone during the day . They offered him a fair price so it'll work out I guess .

From my understanding they are a poorly managed company with horrible customer service spun off from a somewhat shady car dealership built on selling cars to people who can't afford them. And they repackaged that into a fancy web interface designed to get people to buy overpriced vehicles that they haven't thoroughly inspected... and make the money back from overpaying you for their inventory by making huge money on financing.

So no, I have no personal experience with them and intend to never deal with them... although an ex bought two cars from them at insane interest rates and both needed expensive repairs soon after that of course they didn't cover because it's a used car, it's your problem.

I sold my '15 Tacoma back in the covid days to Carvana for what I thought was a crazy price. A few things concerned me, the main one being that they wanted the title before I got my money.

I owned my truck outright so loans and payoffs were not a factor. In the end we worked out the details and I got my money and it was a smooth transaction.

Yes, a couple years ago. I also still had a loan on it but they cut me a check for the difference right in the driveway. It was about the easiest transaction I have ever done.
The fact that he has zero free time or communications from 06:30 to 16:00 complicates things too . Carvana wanted a statement from his lender showing the 10 day payoff , and it had to be on Bank letterhead in a PDF format . That was a real hoot . I had to call the Bank and pretend to be him, and answer security questions , etc . When she said that they needed to send a four digit code to the phone number on file I really had to get creative . I pulled it off though .

I sold one car to Carvana a few years back. It was very smooth and painless, but the car was paid off, so maybe that made it easier.

If I had to sell my car today, I'd seriously consider them again. They're offering a lot more for my Crosstrek than my local Subaru dealer.

Most normal dealers finance department will call the bank for payoff. Weird that they do not.

As someone who has direct experience with them, and not going by rumor, I can attest that my experience selling them my Audi A6 for north of 18k was seamless. They had a cashiers check for the full amount in the pickup folder, he showed it to me. I signed the back of the title as the seller and dated it and gave it and the keys to the driver. He went to put the car on the flatbed and I walked over to the bank and deposited the cashiers check. When I walked back from the deposit he was tying down the wheels with straps.

Only requirement was the mileage on the car could not exceed 1000 over what it was on the day we agreed on the cash offer. I didn’t even get the car washed once we had agreed on the sale. Filthy with road grime and salt. Their driver only checked the mileage and a cursory walk around the car looking for undisclosed dings and dents.

I also bought a used SUV from them. It was in Arizona and they shipped it up to the northeast for free. It was perfectly as described and shown in the pictures and cleaner inside and out than any new car I have bought. The best part was zero additional fees. Just exactly what my state charges for sales tax, registration and cost of new plates. Not a penny more. I paid in cash with a personal check. We did have a three way call that morning with my bank to confirm the account covered the check. The clear title for the car arrived in the mail about a week later. It took over a month to get the title for another used car purchased from the local dealer, Carvana was faster. I just wish they sold new cars.

I tried to sell my 2019 Ford Fiesta to them at the height of the Covid bump but the online process stalled somehow and they never completed the transaction. I ended up selling it for more at a local dealer.

Easiest sale I’ve ever been through! They gave me more than I expected and they had the check ready when I arrived the next morning at the agreed time. Carvana gave me way more than Carmax offered and I was gone in 15 minutes. The only human interaction I had with them was the title/check exchange. I’d definitely consider them again without hesitation.

my brother has sold them 2 cars, and bought one.
sold them his 2015 Challenger that he just never drove...just taking up driveway space... he paid cash for it, and the sale went simple.
then he bought a Gen 1 Chevy Volt (2014?) from a local dealership. drove that for a couple years, then got worried about some common Volt issues, that parts were unobtanium/ prohibitively expensive, etc., so he traded it to Carvana for a 2017 Escape ( 2.0 EB)...he wasn't aware of the EB coolant issues at the time... that escape had some questionable body/paint work, they put new tires - super cheap Chineseium brand I'd never heard of...etc.

after a year or so of driving that, and worrying about the engine breaking, he traded it in at the same local dealer for a 2020 Bolt, that had had the battery changed under warranty.

My Fiance bought her car from them several years back. ( it took her 3 years of shopping to decide what $10k Econobox to buy) she bought a 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage with 60k'ish mi. she still has....16 payments left...
oh, and her Brother in law got her sister a 23-ish pilot from them this past Christmas..

I sold my F-150 to them before the pandemic, and it was super easy. But my truck didn’t have any liens or anything. I got a decent offer, accepted, and they showed up with a check, had me sign the title over, and drove my truck away. I usually get a few offers before I pick a vendor. Maybe your son can pay off the truck and have title in hand to make the sale easier?

Used Carvana to sell a 2006 Mercedes E350 in good/excellent condition. Filled in the online form and agreed to their offer subject to their inspection. A day or two later someone came by and inspected the vehicle. He handed me a check for the agreed amount and collected the vehicle two days later.

I know I could have got more for it but very easy process and didn't have to deal with any run around from strangers. For me it was worth it and a good experience.
