On a normal vehicle has anyone ever been aware if they plugged up their filter?

I can understand an Auto-RX situation might plug one up but I am curious if normal use would really plug one up.

If filtration get better over miles/use as mentioned in other places on here running the filter for as long as possible would seem to make sense. Even maybe taking off the used filter, dumping any old oil out of it and reinstalling it.

Running the oil filter for 2 changes is actually pretty common. I used to do it on my old Toyota truck, and several others on here have mentioned that they have done it as well. I did it pretty much because I was lazy.

In a good running engine I don't see the problem, as long as OCIs are kept reasonable. I've never plugged a filter, AFAIK.

I agree with that. I just recently stareted taking off my filter, dumping it and reinstalling for another oci. No problems that I know of as of yet

A lot of people would recommend not removing and reinstalling an oil filter because of issues with the gasket leaking after reinstallation. There have been several threads that mention it as a no no. I'm still on the fence about trying it, but have a feeling it isn't as much of a problem as people think it is. I'm trying to get the guts up to do it. :)

Wow, thanks Pablo. A plugged filter is a novelty here. I can't say I ever have seen one before. Tell us about the engine this filter came off of. Is it a beater, your cousin's maybe that he never changes the oil, just adds a quart every 500 miles?

I wonder what caused the pleats to spread and start crushing/tearing, or was that the ham fist that pulled the element out of the can?

At least is is not the common Fram (metal end caps good).

I've seen plenty of plugged up fuel filters in my time. That is a different subject for a different thread though.

I go with that. But IF you have a filter that can go the distance ..but don't choose to buy an oil that will too, then there's no sense in buying the better filter unless you're going to use it over two OCI's.

The issue is that oil and filters rarely match up in lifespan except in severe service where either the fuel consumption is so out of whack with using mileage as a measure (taxi, etc. where you're really getting the same or more utility - but don't know it) or when the fuel enrichment cycle is almost perpetual/full time.

I can think of much better ways to save $6-$12 than reusing an oil filter for 2 OCI's. This holds especially true when one considers that new vehicles rarely go for less than $20,000 these days. Though I am sure that most filters these days are up to the task of going through 2 OCI's, why roll the dice?

Honda states that an oil filter can be used for 2 OCI's, but I never felt comfortable doing so. For the cost of 1-2 Pay-Per-View rentals I can replace the oil filter every OCI. If I use each oil filter for 2 OCI's, I will save a total of $18-$20 per year. That is simply not worth it in my opinion.

As the saying goes, a picture is worth 1000 words.

This one actually has holes in the paper where the oil perforated it at the tube.

widman...but what is the story on this?

I said normal use. There is no way that is normal use.

That is from a Toyota 4Runner 3.0 Turbo Diesel with 1500 miles on Esso XT4, with an overly rich mixture. The car had a total of just under 60,000 miles.

It was a rental that the owner was taking back.

In the course of the month (or two) I plan on cutting a hundred or so used filters. I'll post what I find.

I don't think I've seen a plugged one, but I do recall removing the oil filter off of a Pontiac V8. When I turned the filter over to drain it maybe half a cup of oil came out.

I've never seen one plugged up before, but I changed the oil on my sisters Subaru once and the oil just spilled out like there was nothing in the filter keeping it in there. I drained it and cut it open... NO FILTER MEDIA! Nice going Bosche.

Lyondellic I agree with you 100%, like I always say the person that buys cheaply made oil filters or reuses them will go out for lunch the next day and pay $7.00 dollars for a Whopper with Cheese meal but yet the are happy with the few dollars they saved on their oil change on a vehicle, it just does not make any sense to me.

Look at this filter from a 2001 540i BMW!

40,000 miles on car. 3,000 miles on filter/oil change. I think this car had some problems when he bought it!

Better out than in!!
