"...I'm surprised no one mentioned tapping the filter on the circumferential lip using a cold chisel to try unscrewing the filter. I've never tried it, but it seems like a good last resort (assuming there's enough clearance).

LOL! One slip of your cold chisel onto the oil filter base (mostly made of aluminium, unless you are dealing with iron block) and you'll either chip, nick or cause a ridge on the side of the oil filter mounting base or mating surface, causing sealing troubles.

IMHO the only 2 types of tool that I would use in trying to break free of a stuck oil filter would be ( a ) a 3-pronged filter wrench with teeth on the prongs, and the more you try to turn your handle, the tighter the prongs grip and cut into the can.

(b) strap wrench.

I have more trouble with the smaller timble ones. I'd hand tighten them on but always need my filter plyer and crush them to get them off. I now use the bigger oversized and can usually get better leverage to get them off with my hands or my plyers.

2007 F150 5.4L factory filter. For some reason they felt the need to put it on with an impact wrench! Just kidding, but it took a lot of cursing and fighting to get it out of the small access area Ford designed. By the time I got it out it was crushed and leaking from several puncture holes.

3 Free Oil change coupons at a dinner comedy show for a Chrysler dealer ship, dosen't exclude cummins turbo diesel.
Go get first oil change, 11 qt's delo 400, mopar filter, everythings good right? Go to change oil myself, first clue something is wrong need to use 1/2" breaker bar to remove oil drain plug, next break Dad's 30+ year old Ford script oil filter wrench on filter, end up having to remove passenger side battery and use 18" channel locks to remove filter. Netherless the other 2 free oil change coupons got sent to the service manager with a written complaint and not used.
