I just had my first oil change done on my new suv. I opted for M1 5W-30 as the price was really good, 31 bucks for 4.4 liters and the extra liter with it, not too bad in my books. I had the change done, when the shop super came and told me that Kia doesn't recommend sythetic oils? I asked him why, and he stated "I don't know. It may cause premature ring wear or something like that." I told him that my other car has ran the same oil since I bought it, and it runs perfect, M1 from the dealership. He said that cars do run smooter on synthetics. Is there any credence to this, or is he just trying to get me to pay 7 to 8 dollars per liter of bulk oil that he purchased for less than 1 per liter?

I do beleive that my vehicles run way smoother on synthetic. The vehicle seems to accelerate more readily. I also noticed that my RPM's are a tad higher, like 200 rpm. Both my Sunfire and Sorento idle at just under 1000 RPM's.

Smoothness wise my vehicles run the same with dino or synthetic. HOWEVER, in the winter the synthetics have been "quieter" when starting than dino oils of the same viscosity group. In my 2002 F-150 with the 4.6L V-8 I've been using Motorcraft 5W-20 since new and in single digit and below temps it starts just as quietly as my previous vehicles when I used synthetic oil in them in the winter.

Today's dino/blend oils are soooo much better than "yesterday's" oils.

Whimsey

The only car I've ever heard a manufacturer suggesting against the use of synthetic oil in is the Mazda RX-8, due to the nature of the engine and it's need to consume a certain amount of oil during operation. Synthetic oil won't hurt a thing in a Kia.

I did hear that the mazda rotary engine is not recommended to run sythetics, I just think he is trying to get me to buy bulk oil at an inflated price.

No doubt he makes four times the profit margin on the mystery oil in his 300 gallon bulk tank. He has a fixed margin on the M-1 or any other over the counter packaged oil.

Placebo effect all the way! Your idle control valve adjust where the vehicle idles. You could run straight 50 weight and the RPM would be the same.

I agree; people always say their car "runs better" with synthetic and I roll my eyes.... Now if they'd done a tuneup or something tangible, then yeah, I'd believe them. Until then, I think its just a trick of the mind trying to justify the extra cost of the synthetic.

are they importing their bulk oil as well as the vehicles?

I pay $2.14 a litre for bulk oil at the dealership.

M1 is not a sythetic anyways!!!

So really you really have not ever ran a synthetic oil in your car! you would not know the diffrence

I could never work at a place like a dealership. Those folks are so quick to tell a lie to fool the customer into taking whatever deal they're selling. I could never think so fast... I like to mull things over in my mind and make sure that what I say is absolutely true.

These guys, they have you on the spot, then they say whatever bogus piece of information they can muster to get you to say "OK" before you have a chance to realize what a bunch of bull they just said!

kia is basically the cousin of HHYUNDAI and I have an elantra and if you read the manual it never mentions synthetics. It states that Quaker state oil is preferred but never mentions that synthetic oil is acceptable. I asked the service manager and he also did not recommend synthetic oil. So maybe there is something to it . Castro syntec seems to run well in the elantra however MC5w20 didnot perform so well engine to noisy.
