I had a pan drop and filter replacement the other day with Dex6 in place of dex3. I talked with the mechanic and told him I wanted to get as much of the old stuff out as possible. He told me its hard to do since GM does not believe in drain plugs, but he will do the best he could. The manual calls for 5 quarts for this procedure and he managed to get in 6 (I brought in the dex6 myself).

Either he is good enough to get out an extra quart or his tuck now has 6 quarts of dex6 in it. What do you think. I also suppose it is possible that 5 quarts is the low end of full and 6 is the absolute max. When I checked the fluid level its spot on the max full line.

He seems like a decent enough guy and has worked on my truck before without trouble. Perhaps I'm just paranoid.

If you wanted all the fluid out you could have had "flushed" via cooler tubes. The usual method, which has issues also.

Or located the drain plug on torque converter for the balance of the fluid

I find the drain amount to be estimate and verify via dip.

I take it since you said GM and truck this is a 4L60E.The 4L60E in my Blazer took 6 qts but it has the deep pan.You got the deep pan on yours?

What professional mechanic does not have a liquid extractor?

My wife's Buick does not have a T/C drain plug or a pan plug for that matter. When I got here used on it had already been drain fairly well. The T/C already had a lot of fluid in it so I just toped it off. The transmission ended up takeing 11 quarts of ATF. Now that was starting out with 4 and moveing to level ground. Then I drove it and checked it again and added a quart and so on. Each time I would drive it a good 20 minutes at 55-60MPH and then shift through the gear's and then check it in park.Now here Buick that is a 4T60E I cannot imagine a 4L60E or 4L80E not takeing at least 6-8 quarts with a pan drop and filter change.
