So I am at the local Advanced Auto buying some light bulbs for my pick-up and I see 7 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 sitting on the counter next to the register. I ask the guy, "what's the deal with the Ultra?" He said that they aren't carrying it any more and we are discounting it to $3.99 a quart........

I'll take all 7 bottles please.

I think there are a lot of deals going on behind the scenes to push one brand vs another.Sorta like Coke vs Pepsi on your grocers shelf.SOPUS is favored one place,Ashland another,Mobil another...

Not long ago I was at the same company store here in the MW buying some PureOne filters for the spring oil change and they had about 13 quarts of G-Oil 5W30 in the racks. I looked twice and the stickers said $0.25 per quart.

I asked the counter guy if that was correct and he said yes, they could not move it so they were selling out the remaining stock and would not be replenishing the stock.

He said, "I will sell it to you for $0.05 a quart just to get it out of here if you want it." I gulped and said, "SURE."

I figured:

1) I would use it in my OE engines

2) I could not mix up my own batches of OE oil for the year with my own goodies at that price.

Yeah, and a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer too, use it all the time to make sure my engine lubrication can survive on the surface of the sun.

But the Lucas Oil Stabilizer thins it out. So the counter that I will use 20W-60 Red Line to ensure I have the HTHS I desire.
