2014 Chevy Traverse with 6,000 miles in whatever bulk the quickie place put in. Not too impressed with the glue job as that endcap came off soon as I cut thru the can. Looks ok otherwise. Put a PH 500 champ labs and Eco Power 5w30 in and on. Made on Septwmber 10th, 2015, Line "C" and 2nd shift in Fayetteville NC

I wonder how much longer before every filter is using the slits instead of holes? It might make the new ecores look more attractive. You've got to believe that the engineers worked out how much open area is needed and the slits provide more than enough, but then quality control comes into play and in my experience that's where companies sometimes cut costs first.
 
You don't see parts plus or premium guard or wix or even FRAM stuff using slits. My two cents is they know what works for them

I thought Baldwin and Hastings did use slits. Weren't they the first ones to use them actually?

Also, Fram uses slits in many of their filters, including M1 and CQ.

I have no issues with louvered center tubes IF they are done right. If the slits are opened up the thickness of a piece of paper (like these look to be), then I have to wonder if they will restrict flow or not ... even though there are many slits.

And yes, manufacturing and QC is a big part of it. You can have a perfect design on a drawing, but if it's not made to print then it can become junk really quick.

News to me. Every Baldwin I've seen posted here has used a louvered centertube design. A google image search of bitog would indicate/confirm that. As does the Baldwin literature: "Spiral Wound Louvered Centertube with fluted ribs allows for maximum flow and adds strength to resist pressure surges." Would be interested though in seeing the Focus application mentioned that doesn't have them.

As for topic G7, jobber filter with endcap popper. Using Jim Allen as reference, as long as leaf spring working as designed and potting/glue intact not a functional issue, failure. Looks to be the case here.

As for louver openings, not going to speculate. Not wanting to feed the louver phobia. Will say though, some years ago when Champ(now Rank/Fram) was having the issue with some louver stampings not all open, they said flow was still adequate. Whether one believes/believed them up to the individual. Just reporting what they said.

I'm not anti-louver, but the nice thing about holes is you can tell at a glance if they are open or not so you know the filter will work as designed. Now we're looking at all these filters with slits and wondering if they are open enough or not and we have no way of knowing.
 
I for one don't wonder, bigger things to be concerned about. I suppose if one does have a concern about the louver design though, just use a brand that doesn't use them. Simple.
 
I think most baldwins have been louvered for a long time. Everyone I have had has been.

Those slits do look small though. The qs and puro I have are open much wider than that is.

I remember those photos ... looked similar to those posted by car51 at the top of the thread. All I know is that many photos seen of louvered center tubes shows the slits opened up a pretty good amount - like around 1~2 mm. But seeing slits that are no more opened than the thickness of a sheet of paper (0.010") makes me leery. IMO, they need to be opened a fair amount to ensure the total flow area is as least as large as the total flow area of the base plate holes.

One could do a calculation of X number of slits times Y flow area on each slit. If a slit is only opened 0.010" x 0.100" wide (assumed dimensions), then that's only 0.001 sq-in per slit. If there were 400 slits then that comes out to only 0.40 sq-in, which is way less than what the total area of the base plate holes would be on any typical filter.

If those 400 slits were opened up 2 mm (0.080"), then the total flow area would be 0.080" x 0.100" x 400 slits = 3.20 sq-in. Huge difference.
 
Again, just reporting what 'Champ said' after the fact when brought to their attention. But clearly in 'that' instance it appeared some of the openings were not 'open at all' at least to some members, and Champ as much admitted and retooled the stamping machines. I'm not willing to concede that the G7 here are not open at all.

One is entitled to think about this G7 as they will. As I don't use them not of significant concern to me. But either way, it wouldn't keep me from using a louvered centertube filter.

However, back in 2011 when the Champ was having the reported issues, I bought an ST7317 to check one out. Rather than naked eyeball alone I put a flashlight down the centertube from both ends and these were the results. Based those results, I would have used them at the time. Be interesting to see what this G7 looked like with the light test. IMO, more indicative of whether the louvers are open adequately than an eyeball of the centertube.

I think the best way to determine adequate slit flow area is to do the calculation and compare the center tube total flow area to the base inlet hole total flow area. In my example above, if the slits were just cracked open 0.010" then it surely would be lacking in total flow area.

They don't look very open to me either. I am like you Zee ... it makes me wonder if the flow will be restricted. I have used Baldwin and Hastings filters with louvered center tubes that were done correctly, so I have no problem with using oil filters with the louvered tubes as long as they have been manufactured correctly.
