I believe you are seeing pieces & small chunks of carbon deposits. The edges get rounded off while circulating with the oil & it ends up looking like a large grain of sand.
At your next oil change, cut the filter apart & examine the bottom of the can and also look in the filter pleats. You will probably see similar particles.
My GM Sierra 5.3L had both dark & light brown colored particles in the filter after an Auto-RX treatment at about 42K miles.
The 5.3L V8's tend to run at low rpm's & lug in overdrive, so combustion chamber & carbon deposits are just a matter of miles & engine hours.
- But I'm still a big fan of these engines!
