I need advice choosing between the new Mobil 1 0W-30 with the green cap and PP 5W-30.

I have a Toyota 4GR-FSE direct injection gas 2.5L V6. I am currently running Amsoil SSO 0W-30, which now costs more than I wish to spend. I know to get your money out of that oil, you need to do extended drain intervals using the Amsoil Ea filter. One issue with that is that Amsoil does not make an Ea oil filter for my engine AND I intend to do the oil changes per the maintenence requirments until I am out of warranty, which is every 5K miles.

There is plenty of info on the PP 5W-30, and it is good and bad, but mostly good. The consumption issue some folks have and the debate over cleaning are the bad, but the solid wear numbers and price point are the good. I could not find any UOA on the Mobil 1 0W-30, as it is a new product. I had used M1 5W-30EP for 5K, and found that I had higher iron than I was comfortable with. However, that is a different formulation AND that oil was installed when the engine had only 10K on the clock.

I am leaning toward the PP 5W-30. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Mike

Still some good rebates on Mobil AFE. Both are good in cold, with PP actually staying thinner at near sub-zero F.

Someone please fact check that.

Green cap 0w-30 is the one you need. Besides, another thing your research would find is a link between M1 and Toyota engines and the combo is a good one.

Given a choice of 0W-xx vs 5W-xx I would use the 0W, simply for the fact that it will flow better when cold, even at temps as high as 75*F. Even if it is a very slight difference I want that difference. If you want a compromise then run the 0W-30 in the winter months and the 5W-30 during the summer. In any event they are both the same at operating temperatures. By the way it's also impossible to find Pennzoil 0W-anything in my area.

I use Mobil 1 for the following reasons:
  • OTT OEM specification compliance
  • HT/HS rating that would be more applicable of 5W-20 viscosity for my 5W-20 rated engine

As mentioned, Mobil 1 and Toyota's are a good mix. If Mobil 7500 was still available, I would suggest it. It is a great PAO synthetic blend that can easily go 5k miles. It has delivered results akin to M1 in Toyotas. I am currently running the 0W-30 in my Tundra and will do a UOA. I have heard that this is the same as the old M1 0W-30 formula, so it is not new, just rereleased. Perhaps you can find a UOA in the archives.

I used Mobil 7500 for break-in (first 20k miles) and agree that it was a fantastic oil that was almost identical if not better then the M1 I used after break-in (30 to 40k). I would use Mobil DC 7500 in a heartbeat given its value (price+performance) over either PP as well as M1 (price prohibitive). Too bad my car calls for 5w-20 because I would be using that 7500 0w-30 which I didn't even know existed as well the M1 0w-30 I recommended over the PP for the OP. Frankly, I did not see any gas mileage improvements with either M1 or PP but I got a Honda mill so that is why I recommend the M1 0w-30 for the OPs Toyota!

Thanks to everyone for their insightful responses.

This was a tough call. I went and bought the PP 5W-30, then read about Toyota engines and Mobil 1 per the recommendations made on this thread and decided to go with the Mobil 1 at the after researching. I think either oil would be great in this application, but chose the Mobil due to it being a 0W-30, which is the same as the SSO I am running now. I'll post my UOA from the M1 0W-30 next year.

Should be fine, its a shame Pennzoil doesn't get the 0W-xx oils to the stores. Here in the NY area its impossible to find.

Did you crunch the numbers on that? If so, can you share them?
