Oh, Deer: Steyn Shoots Down Kerry's Hunting Tale

Doh! A deer!

Apparently hoping to outdo Hillary Clinton's improbable attempt to reinvent herself as a duck hunter, John Kerry has tried to avoid alienating supporters of gun rights by depicting himself as a deer hunter. Mark Steyn will have none of it.

Steyn wrote in the London Telegraph yesterday:
"He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach ... That's hunting.'

"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally.

Oh, Pooh

"Possibly his weird Vietnam nostalgia is getting out of control. Still, if I come across a guy in the woods in deer season inching through the undergrowth with a mouthful of bear scat, at least I'll know who it is," Steyn noted.

Considering that these days Kerry looks more like a bunny wabbit than Elmer Fudd, perhaps he could use a refresher course from Gun Owners of America, which, by the way, he still hasn't met with, despite his phony claim that he'd meet with any critical group.

Update from a reader from Minnesota: "The fact that John Kerry claims he crawls around on the ground while deer hunting is less ridiculous than the fact that he claims to hunt deer with a double-barrel 12 guage. Ask any hunter. You hunt deer with either a rifle or a shotgun slug (which you cannot do with a double-barrel shotgun). To a true deer hunter, Kerry's claim is even more ludicrious than Howard Dean stating that the book of Job is in the New Testament and then claiming he is a devout Christian. Kerry's statement clearly shows he has absolutely no clue about hunting."

It is understandable, he is confusing hunting with Carlos Hathcock's accounts of sniping in Vietnam.

He got his cue cards mixed up.

Scroll down to the bottom couple paragraphs.

Sniping

They know a bit about deer hunting in Wisconsin, I don't think that many people beleived him about this one.

Ironically, I got a job predictor program in an e-mail. Basically you type in your name, and using an algorythm, it picks an "ideal" job for you. John Kerry comes up as a big game hunter.

Where I grew up, Kerry would have been shot and cleaned hunting deer that way. I think its time to start hiding guns and ammunition.

The next step is confiscation of arms if he becomes president.

The article about Carlos Hathcock did not mention his encounter with a large snake, 3/4 of the way into that very stalk on the nva general. As he was inching through the grass, he came face to face, a few inches apart, with a large jungle snake with yellow eyes. He froze, and waited for the snake to move on its way. How many people would have been able to do that. Carlos Hathcock was also THE sniper that killed ANOTHER SNIPER, by shooting through both lenses of the other snipers rifle scope, killing him by shooting him in the eye. That means that the other sniper was only a second or two from killing him. This has been reenacted in the movies, but Carlos was the one to do it in real life!

Well we are talking real man when you say sniper versus, uh, Kerry...

Can John Kerry document hunting deer? Did he ever purchase a hunting license? Did he hunt without one? Did he fail at deer hunting? If he did ever shoot one, did he report his kill? I haven't hunted since I moved out of Pennsylvania in 1966. At that time, if you shot a deer, you had to attach a tag and send the stub into the state. How does it work in Massachusetts? Does he have any film or even a still picture? Is his hunting story another crock? Will the news media track him down?

DAN4510, I fail to understand your response to my post?! I was just expounding on the exploits of Mr Hathcock. Had nothing to do with Mr Kerry. Whether Mr Kerry crawls on the ground with a double barrel shotgun shooting deer is irrelevant. I wish him luck. Because he definately will need it with that hunting technique, on deer.

Mr Hathcock was also a national champion in the sixties, on the shooting range. He also was severely burned in Vietnam, and suffered for the remainder of his life from it. A true hero in my book.

MAJA,

I thought I did quite well communicating my respect for true men--the snipers that I have researched and they are nothing short of awesome in their level of skill, determination, and ability to carry out a mission under difficult circumstances. And I thought I did quite well in my derision of Kerry, a man who recieved three medals for what amounts to scratches and then came home and concocted stories about "atrocities" created by fellow americans. According to all I can research he did not see any of this he only "HEARD ABOUT IT." But he showed up in front of Congress testilying about it...
Sniper=man with large cojones
Kerry=exact opposite in my opinion and a hypocrite to boot.

Maja, do you understand now?

I think we both agree with the assessment of Hathcock being a true hero to us all, and Kerry being a made-up hero in his own mind. But I see no reason to diminish Hathcocks achievements by comparing him to Kerry.

Do you understand now?

''I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel'' ''You hunt deer with either a rifle or a shotgun slug (which you cannot do with a double-barrel shotgun)''

OK, how many believe he ever went hunting? I though so. To me the double barrel 12 gauge is one of the more believable details. I don't think I have carried a gun into the woods since 1965. However I did grow up in Western Pennsylvania. That end of the state practically shut down the Monday after Thanksgiving because it was the first day of buck season. Traffic backed on PA route #8 south of Franklin at 4 in the morning. My father in law lived in Warren. He refused to stay at his father's in law in Pittsburgh over Thanksgiving because of the terrible traffic heading North.

Those that had come by one somehow, were out with their 30-40 Krag*. Those not so lucky but with a little money had a 30-06. There were plenty of antlers nailed to barns with a 30-30 in the house. There were .303 Enfields and everything else. The rest made do with various calibers of shotguns with pumpkin balls, or perhaps really slugs. Mostly pump action. I forget whether it was deer or small game you had to plug them, limiting you to 3 shots without reloading. I don't remember anybody blowing the rent money on a 30-06 because they couldn't hunt deer with their double barrel 12 gauge. I can't say I ever knew anybody that used one for deer either. After all, you would have a second shot after clearing out up to 4'' trees with the first one. It has been a while, but I never remember anybody crawling along the ground to hunt deer either. I think tree stands were illegal. The only buck I ever shot was legal, but perhaps unfairly from up on a large rock.

*I checked Ebay. There aren't any at any price. There are some parts and stuff.

It's been a while since I've fired slug out of any shotgun. Please educate us on why a slug can't be fired from a 12 gauge double barrel.

While we're being educated, what is this fascination with hanging the dead, stuffed heads of animals on the wall?
I've done my share of hunting (and eating) but I was never moved to hang body parts up in my home.

I no longer hunt, but don't have anything against it. I also don't think hanging preserved used animal body parts on your wall is particularly strange. With some hunters it's a show of respect for the animal. It isn't like a dead deer's head is going to do the deer any good.

Double barrel shotgun is usually one barrel moderate and one barrel full choke, slugs and full chokes do not mix...Could cause serious damage to the gun or operator. Full choke brings the diameter of the barrel down to hold the shot together longer and make a better pattern at long distance. 12 gauge slug is appreciably larger than the barrel, could run the risk of sticking and blowing up the breech or splitting the end of the barrel...

Need a rifled barrel or a barrel the same inside diamter all the way down teh barrel for a slug.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does help. That's a long ways from the "You hunt deer with either a rifle or a shotgun slug (which you cannot do with a double-barrel shotgun)." that Newsmax released and is being slavishly quoted by people

who knbow even less about shotguns than I do. Also, don't forget rifled slugs. You don't need a rifled barrel. The only slugs I ever fired from a shotgun were in a smooth bore barrel with a rifled slug.
