I am looking for a new GPS. Looking for something with free map updates. Not sure to go with 4.3 or 5.0 screen. Also dont know if I want traffic updates. Are the adds from Garmin on the free traffic alerts that bad as some reviews I have read?? How about TomTom, do their traffic alerts have ads also.

I have a 3.5" widescreen. 205W Garmin I believe. No traffic but I have an iphone for that. No map updates but it is still good 5+ years after I got it for most every road I take, and I travel a LOT. If you travel a lot and want to take it by air, the GPS in a protective box can become an unwieldy size if the screen is too big. Ive never felt the need for a huge screen and its associated cost.

If I had my choice, I would use one that spoke the actual street names, which mine doesnt, and which has better clarity on how the lanes split off in areas where there are a lot of lanes going in each direction.

The one time I saw a GPS with traffic and ads, it seemed to show a lot of red lobsters and olive gardens...

Get one of these refurbished for $159:

Make sure you update the firmware (easy to do but takes time to download; works with Windows 7).

The traffic ads have died down since the recession. Younger folks are just using their smart phones and Google Maps.

I've owned this unit for a few years. Yeah, red lobsters and olive gardens, and I don't remember seeing them lately anyway (the ads, that is).

I have one of these too among a few others. New, it sure cost more. Yeah, the firmware update can take a few hours.

It's funny how naming street names is a pricey option. I lack it, go with a ghetto 3.5" screen which is more than good. Have the cheapest refurb garmin from WM and if I'm following someone with a "smarter" garmin they use the same navigational brains going down the same crazy side streets.

My TomTom I got a couple Black Friday's ago from WM......is eeeehhh....it's OK, it works.....but yea, the Pay for Map updates strategy sucks.....so now I personally just use my Android phone, ala Google Maps
