Hey all,

Well, after 17 years of developing processes to save many tens of thousands of lives in Medical Engineering, I and a huge percentage of others got the ax. My development job is going overseas.

Being there that long I got a good severance, so now is the big decision to jump back into it, take about a year off or start up one of my business ideas.

Mixed feelings and it was sad and highly unfortunate that it happenned, but hopefully I will be fine.

Oh no, now I may even spend "even more" time on BITOG...

Be well everyone...

Take my word for it - it will sting for awhile, but you will be much better off in the long run!! There is a plan for you. When it happened to me - and I stepped out of the mess with a clear head, I realized the cretins I had been getting a pay check from....for what they are - people with the ethics of a dead cockroach. Only more lively.

Just don't take it personally (not saying you are) or have anyone else throw it in your face.

I lost my job summer before last and qualified for TRA benefits. Currently pursuing a degree in graphic design, have my own business and a better quality of life. Money was tight for a while but we adjusted and found ways to make ends meet. Life goes on and your job is not your life. I'm definitly a proponent of self-employment now!

peace,
Doug

It's tough - it used to be one big family, but after another company takes over, it all changed. 27 years in the High Tech industry - I think I want a break! I've got full medical for up to 2 years, that helps a lot.

Pablo, Amsoil plant is only 1.5 hours away..... Hummm...

Have the wife get a second job. Stay home and relax. Live like a king ..but get used to an occasional revolt in the kingdom.

Milk unemployment for all it's worth, visit Europe or something, and then open up that business you've always wanted. The only way to make it big in America anymore is to be your own boss.

Like my friend Tim Sales says, hope you learned your lesson. What hurts the most is seeing someone layed off, downsized or worse "fired" go out with their suit and tie and resume to do the same ole thing.

Take the business ideas and run with it. I'm a big fan of Donny Duetsche on CNBC. I'm also a big fan of Robert Kiyosaki too.

This is the golden age of Entrepreneurship, it's never been easier to go into business for yourself.

Just don't through too many eggs in one basket.

I'll be looking to see where are heading with this.

PS Don't take any time off to go to Europe, get started right now, so you can make a couple Million and then go see Europe, Carribean, or Fiji any darned time you like!!

Go Get Em!

Been self employed my entire life. Not really all it's cracked up to be. BUT,,,still betting getting LAID is more fun than getting laid OFF!!

Not married, so can't have a wife take on another job - nice try though...

Starting up a business could be good for me, but there would be a lot of hours.

Hey Australia could be the ticket...

I should cash in on all my airline miles while they're still there & go somewhere fun & warm...

Do you mind if I ask how old are you? For me, being made REDUNDANT (You are not laid off, you are never going back) was the best thing that ever happened to me. What do you really want to do? How many hours would you like to work? For 17 years these have not been options for you, Now they are!
It may feel strange right now, You may FEEL unwanted, But get your head around it, What did they 'want' you for!
My advice, take a vacation (Do not set a time limit on your vacation, your life is yours now!) at some point you will know EXACTLY what YOU want to do!
Good Luck, and welcome to the FREE world.

I have been fired and laid off once each in my lifetime. Best things that have happened to me since I got a much better job each time..and currently doing side work as well. Just stay smart, and things will be better for you in the future.

I'm in my mid 40's, so yea, I can do anything I want - just need to take a bit of time & go from there.

I have cancelled vacations for work and have pretty much lived to work. Right - I really should take a vacation - haven't got away for 3 years except for work in Ireland.

There will be classes for expert resume writing and I will do that and put 'er on ice. They will pay for college classes, so I'll do some of them also. Being in High Tech for 26 years, I have tons of contacts and memberships, most of them are great friendships also.

I do want to get of the high stress corporate world and this may be my (paid) chance...

Was it GE Medical that laid you off ??

Don't spend any money you don't have to and watch every penny. With your vast experience you will find a great job.

No, it was someone else. I can be so tight I can squeak! Even with Amsoil I'd still squeak!

I'll be fine; there's just too many choices of paths to take that actually causes the problem & I wanna do what's right.
