Say Jenny, is that cali as in California or as in Colombia?

Nopbody has addressed the fundamental question of what does Dad want from the car? If long engine life is the main consideration, then frequent oil changes say 3 months intervals are the ticket and Chevron 10-30 at $0.49 a qt after rebate will do fine. If long engine life is not a consideration, then just let him follow stealership-recommended service and buy a new one when this one is worn out or sludged up.

I think this makes sense only if he actually has somewhere to go, or really misses driving on the highway. Otherwise, put some of the extra gas money towards more frequent oil changes!

I'd follow the manufacturer's recommended interval since it's probably under warranty for another two years.
If not under warranty and basically driven daily, I'd go 6 months. If driven every 2nd day or less, I'd go 1 year.
Either situation, I'd go with whatever type of oil Lexus recommends, and whatever brand you prefer.

Drew99GT is correct on this as I said. Look guys in a short trip low temp use, fuel and water vapor will build up with syn, mineral, ester, 5/50 grade, PCMO or DEO makes NO difference just change out the oil 3-6 months with a NON diesel rated oil.
Bye the way MOST PCMO's have a low sulfated ash well under 1.0% an ash level of 1.2% is WAY to high for this application.

Sorry but this is one time a supper syntethic high dollar oil is of no use but if you have the bucks use it but still get the crud out of the engine buy Changing it.
 
Drew99GT, bruce381, I'm with you... trips are too short to evaporate any condensed water vapor in the motor oil. Best to get it out sooner rather than later.

Sulphur and nitrogen oxides (SOx, NOx) and to a lesser degree carbon oxides react with water to form acids... which can cause premature chemical etching wear in your engine, and definitely decrease your TBN (total base number) quicker than it needs to.

My prescription? Take the Lexus out on the highway once a week for about 1/2 an hour whether it needs to or not... and you'll be fine with 1x a year OCIs. Otherwise, I'd stick with 2x a year OCIs.

Any thoughts on a 1999 Buick Park Avenue that just passed 8800 miles in Naples Florida. It gets an oil change and detail every 6 months. It is Fire Mist red with a light beige leather interior.

As you can see it doesn't get driven much. It does have a new GM Battery. You will have to fight over it with the guys at the Buick dealer. These guys call every 6 months or so asking my mom how she is doing. Lets not be too obvious OK guys. By the way she traded her 95 Olds 88 with 12,700 miles in for the Park Ave. That car also got 6 month details and oil changes. That worked out to 1270 mile oil change intervals. The Park Ave is working on 735 mile OCI's since it was bought in July 99.

Sorry, I'll stick to my '01 Grand Marq with 24k miles, w/ grey leather, V-8 and RWD.

Is the Park A the supercharged version with the front fender ports? Those are decent, but still driving the wrong wheels.

Sounds good though for 6 yr old car w/ 8800 miles.

Yes. Keeping oil in a car for 4 or 5 years if the mileage on the cars is rather low isn't a big concern.

In California, 200degF oil temperatures in a car such as the Lexus would be reached within 5 minutes of operation, even less when the car has already been started once in a day. Unless the car is literally being used to go to the end of the block and back for those 3000 miles a year, one really shouldn't be concerned.

Also, California has some of the lowest sulfur fuels available in North America, the result of CARB mandates. This leads to favourable oil life insofar as TBN is concerned.

A used oil analysis is the definitive proof, but 10k miles irregardless of time with a good synthetic (ie: Mobil 1 Extended Performance, XD-3 Synthetic, GC, etc.) remains my recommendation.
 
I'm not sure, you'll have to ask Molakule, but the esterlike stuff is derived from PAO, sort of refined enough to step it up a grade and is probably not that hydroscopic.

If it were my dad, and he lived ANYWHERE near me, I'd "volunteer" to take the car in for oil changes, car washes, etc! And take that puppy on a nice long drive. Then he could still do his little 6 mile a day round trips. You'd at least get to have some fun in the Lexus and clean some of the junk out of it too. Not ideal, but heh, it's a thought, and it's a cool Lexus!

And just think of the points you'll score with the old man for being so kind.
 
Full synthetic 5w30. Why synthetic? Because it's a Toyota. Why 5w30? Because that's what toyota recommends.

Which brand? I don't know, but it should have good antioxidant additive to battle the contaminated oil.

Hey Lobster...HOWDY! We guys need more folks of the female persuasion around here. (Quick question: Who persuaded you, and how did they do it?) Don't worry about Audi Junkie. I know girls don't have cooties or nuthin'. Heck, I even married one! (A girl-type person, not a cootie).
Anyway, I was going to suggest what axjohn said; 'steal' his car once in a while and let her rip. Just don't tell him your ulterior notives. Some daddies can be a real pain if you try to teach them different. My dad had some interesting ideas, and wouldn't listen to me, even when I was making a living as a mechanic.
 
Jenny, if you're still with us, I gotta know just how old this old man father of yours is? I'm afraid he'll be younger than me. And I think he should stick with his twice a year oil changes. If he doesn't want to pay the high dealer prices, there must be a local shop that can do it cheaper with good conventional oil. And

I have a similar situation with a car that sits for 4 - 5 months during the winter. Although my "summer" car does mostly highway driving in warm weather. I was going to try GC in it this summer, but decided against it due to reading on BITOG that GC contained a large amount of ester base stock. And I thought it was accepted that esters, while they may cling well to metal, also absorb water. If the esters in GC don't draw excessive moisture I will try it - the cost is not an issue to me on a once a year oil change.
