Good substitute for Mobil 1 0w30 ???

I would not worry about an oil that thins down a bit in hard use then comes back in grade especially that world class 0w-40 Mobil .It's just getting going good at around 6500 miles in most engines .

Typically oils like this work better in the real world vs the oils on paper w/o VII's in regards to all around longetivity and protection in a variety of motors and conditions speaking of...

Lately there's been more behind the scenes chatter than forum posted talk about two popular brands supposedly w/o VII's and the start noise and poor fuel mileage and rough running when cold from their use .

Not finicky vs finicky and must be used in perfect engines and conditions to get a good analysis comes to mind concerning another brand ..... or two

Most engines, perhaps, but not the 1.8T. VW demands a 5K mile = 8K km OCI with synthetic oil, and I cut this to 3K miles = 5K km for local or stop-and-go driving. Reading a few horror stories on VWVortex and ClubB5 reinforced my paranoid oil changing habits. Also, these engines evidently really do need at least 14 cSt at 100C -- every VW-502.00 oil is a 5W-40, except for the 0W-40 Mobil 1.

And have you seen in the analysis section where the 5w-40's with group III/pao have been ending up at in terms of viscosity ?

Have you checked the analysis section for VOA's of the Mobil 0w-40 used in the 1.8 turbo ? One I can remember thickened on up and was a solid 40wt approaching 50wt but not quite .

I don't own one of those motors , I go by reading the analysis's and the 5w-40's shear a goodly amount and still protect . The Mobil when ran long enough will be solidly in grade .
 
If the 0w-40 is easier to find then by all means go with it. Selection can vary by store I realize, but at least here the local K-Mart (of all places

) always has a crapload of Mobil 1 0w-30.

I'm not sure about your conclusions vis-à-vis qualifying.

But the rest of what you say is right on point. Mobil manufactures Mobil 1 5W-50 and 0W-40 in Europe. If you get the spec sheet for the European 0W-40 you will find that it is quite different and, if I remember correctly, more viscous.

The Audi is in Connecticut and I’m looking for Mobil 1 here. In Europe I would buy the oil off the shelf if I had to but would also often carry American Mobil 1 with me from the USA. In Belgium, the cheapest I could get 4 litres of Mobil 1 0W-40 was €44! Other European countries were generally higher. Scandinavia even worse. That makes oil prices in the USA pretty darn cheap!

Just pull a used oil analysis with whatever oil you run if it's thinner than the 0w-40. A 0w oil is a good idea for you, but the +100c visc still has to be up there. Don't worry about the Mobil 1 0w-40, it's not like you are running strait ND 30 weight or obsolete 20w-50.

I know the Mobil 1 0w-40 gets boring, but it is really about the best fluid for turbo engines.

Actually, was just looking at the specs for German Castrol 0w30 and was considering trying that as it is an ACEA A3, VW 502.00 oil. But not sure if I could even find it!

This forum really is adictive.

Not every VW 502.00 is a 40w. The following are also 502.00 approved:

Quaker State Euro 5w30
Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic 5w30 and 10w30
Castrol Syntec 0w-30

The other day I was in a local gas station in southern Ontario, standing in line for my cup of 'Tim's' coffee and my 10 year old son excitedly came over clutching a bottle of Mobil 1 0w30 (he has been on GC runs with me

I almost only ever see the Mobil 1 0w30 at speciality auto stores, not at just a gas station. The price was well over $8 cdn.

Your original idea to switch to the 0w30- was, with the idea of getting better cold starting protection... Well...

So.. Don't go those places... and while your out east there.. don't go up to wisconsin- their record low was -55C...

As for connecticut- your record low, -32F Feb. 16, 1943.

I think you are safe with the 0W40... just don't plan a mid-winter road trip to the top of a mountain in montana.

Perhaps you can order a case of Esso XD3, 0w30, PAO, full sythetic from an Esso bulk plant in Ontario and get it shipped to you. Prepay it and pay the shipping costs. I am switching to it after the AutoRX rinse phase is over for my 95 Maxima with 60,900 mostly highway miles. I plan to run it year round in our mild coastal climate.

Have a case in the basement. After a used oil analysis of the GC I will do a run of the XD 0w30 and analyze it. I will decide on a single oil after seeing the consecutive used oil analysis of Mobil 1 5w30 (done), GC, XD and maybe Mobil 1 0W-30. Maybe overkill but still lots of fun.

As far as I know, the only choices for a 0w30 oil in the USA are Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec. I've run Mobil 1 0w30 in my Audi 2.7t in the winter witn a 5K OCI and it did just fine, including runs up to 100 mph on winter tires. I wouldn't recommend it for summer use in the Audi, however. In the summer I'd go with Mobil 1 0w40.

Myself, I'm still running made-in-Germany Castrol Syntec 0w30 (GC) year-around.
