My new work computer is here. It's fine, but apparently Windows 7 doesn't have the old "Flying Through Space" screensaver. (Or does it?)

So I'm looking online, and I see some interesting stuff for free (Digimindsoft, for example). But I don't want unknowingly to download a virus or malware. Anybody have a recommendation for a site?

I've never really used a screen saver, so I don't have any ideas for a good site. I'll let someone else answer that one.

Why not custom make a screen saver? I'm not sure windows still has that ability, but I know it did on windows 98 when I used to use a screen saver for a little bit.

I'd just use no screensaver and have it put the monitor to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. Less power usage, and should lengthen the life of the display. If the display is CCFL-backlit, it will extend the life of those lights too.

That being said, I don't think anyone has ported the old Windows screensavers into 7 and beyond. SS are falling out of favor in general.

Win7 still does have screen savers -- only about 6, the old Bubbles and "Mystify" and 4 others. It's true, I could simply have the system cycle through a bunch of (work-safe!) pics on my hard drive, if that's what you mean. Cars, cats, Man from U.N.C.L.E. screen shots . . .

I quit using screensavers, as far back as Windows Me. Made my computer work harder. So I prefer nothing moving on my screen and only stay with still-background wallpapers. My Dell goes into sleep mode after 20 minutes idle, then Hibernate after two hours.

I use different wallpapers seasonally. Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then New Years, then Detroit Lions, then Ground Hog Day, then Detroit Pistons, then Easter, then Detroit Tigers all summer-long. The Tigers one is monthly, all featuring a monthly games schedule.

Back in the day with CRTs that took a while to warm up, a screensaver made more sense. But with an LCD or other flat panel, there isn't much reason anymore unless you want it for entertainment. In fact it is probably better to let the thing go to sleep and shut off the lamp rather than staying on all the time.

My favorite screensaver used to be After Dark for the Macintosh. Flying Toasters.
