Good read on steam oil

An interesting slice of life from another sector of technology. With VI's of ~100 and FP's of ~300F, nobody will be clamoring to run Steam Cylinder Oils in internal combustion engines. Imagine the sleepless nights that gasoline and diesel engines caused oil formulators that were used to steam engine requirements at the turn of the 1900's.

Yes it a whole different ball game with steam, you need the oil to emulsify with water so it will stay in the cylinders and provide lubrication.

I have some Shell Valvata for my models, currently have some original Wilesco W-German made in the boxes from the 60's that have never been fired along with some that have been fired once by me.

I sold a few but i am looking for an original Meccano MEC 1(manmod) stationary engine from around 1967, it was the fist engine i ever owned and got for Christmas 1967.

Thats kool, I wish you luck on your search for your lost model. I currently have a Mamod TE1 and a Wilesco D6. I have a PM Research model on order and hope to get it soon. I wish I had a mill and lathe to make my own models. That shell oil seems to be pretty good stuff from what I heard. I need to find a local source for it but I really don't need 5 gallons at a time.

I had one of those at about the same time.
Yellow Meccano Frame, right?

I have a place in England that makes road tires for the model tractors if needed.

Funny you mention that, I found them late last night and ordered a Jensen boiler to power my new PM Research engine. Would that UK site be Forest Classics?

Yes thats the place. The tires are really nice quality.
Nice to see other steam fans on BITOG. I've been into these things since i was a kid and still find them fascinating to watch.

Yes thats right! Yellow frame with a methylated spirits burner and a fast/slow lever with a red end. The first car i ever worked on was a Meccano steam powered contraption i built.

Fond memories!

It is indeed. We have an annual Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa that I use to volunteer at. Since I started college I haven't found the time to help out during their annual Labor Day Reunions. www.mcrr.org is a link to their website for their mile of narrow gauge track.

Nice! When i was a kid in Europe steam locomotives were still in regular service, we took many a long trip by steam loco.
There is shuttered paper mill here that has a huge steam engine inside, its not moved in 45 years but dry and intact.
I have seen the engine but cant find anyone who worked there to ask questions about it or even what work it performed.

Thats a shame to see those work horses sit and rust. I have a feeling we might be reverting back to that technology if things get really bad. I'm not one to be a "Prep"er but I think its wise to have this knowledge. Water fuel a little pressure, work can be done.

Thats a great point. When there is no gasoline, diesel, NG, propane, etc a good little steam engine could run a generator, power a vehicle and a host of other task.
Wood, coal, wood scrap, pellets basically anything that can burn can be used for fuel to heat the water.

I agree wholeheartedly that steam is something that needs to looked at again.

Exactly, our modern society relies way to much on our infrastructure.
