My daughter is off at school in the Claremont CA area. She will be needing a couple oil changes before I get my hands on the car again, and I dread the notion of some QuickeeOil place screwing on a Fram filter and dumping no-name oil in her car (oh, and accidently draining the expensive syn Saab tranny lube in the process).

Anyone know of any chains in that area that offer reasonably priced oil changes, with choice of oil/filter options?

IF its a Saab then tell her to find a garage that specializes for it, they usually dont charge that much more than a quickie lube for oil changes and know the car. Dont know about selection of oil filters and oil, since most places buy the stuff in bulk so your stuck with what they will recommend. There are quite a few specialists in the LA area for European cars since there are so many of them and most really do know what they are doing even the war torn looking specialist garages.

Or find a decent looking Chevron or Mobil, they arent as good but better than a speedy lube place.

My sister was going to school out in West L.A. for graduate school. She used to take in her four quarts of oil and filter to shops where she could watch the service through the window. They would usually charge $6 or $7 for the labor. I hope this helps you

Inform her of the right oil and filter and have her buy them first, and take them to a Quick lube.

Any reputable general repair shop could do a motor oil change on the Saab. More complex repairs are a different story. She might ask several of her professors for local shop recommendations, and maybe send an e-mail to or chat with the university's fleet maintenance shop or facilities manager (someone who's mechanically inclined) for shop referrals.

Have your daughter try a local independant garage, especially one that specializes in Saab or European makes. Yes they may charge a bit more but she'll at least have a view of shop in case she needs repairs.

I work down the road in Riverside...you tell her what oil to get, and I'll change it for her for free (insert creepy laughing here....JUST KIDDING, I SWEAR TO GOD!). I used to do oil changes at my college in Irvine a couple of years ago for my friends just for the price of the parts....then you get sucked into installing alternators and clutches for free! Aaaah!

Other than that, EZ Lube is the best retail chain in SoCal...about $29 regular/$19 with coupon for Mobil dino and Mobil filter, free top-offs and inspection. M1 ends up being like $49, but again free top off and parts-only if you just want to change the filter at 6K miles or so, that way it'll make it back to NJ for Christmas.
