Good or bad? Special ordering a brand new car?

I let them get away with their little scam.
I was emotionally invested in having that car and not willing to go through any more car shopping at that point.
The leather was fine, never had an issue with it.

But, a year or two later, I noticed that my seat heater switches looked nothing like those in a RAV4 sitting in a lot...the heaters were aftermarket and I'd guess cheap. They worked, but I was still mad.
BTW, I bought my FXT off the lot...

This is how dealers get you into a car by breaking you down and selling you something you really didn't want. Basically it's a form of psychological abuse.
Another way is to get you into the dealership and play the "runaround" game with them during the course of a day or so.
You become hungry, tired and frustrated and at the end of it all, you end up paying THEM!

It happens all the time. Makes me wonder why/how ppl. still choose to deal with dealerships.

I honestly would have walked if I had found an alternative to the RAV6 that I liked at a reasonable price.
I drove a Volvo wagon that had impressive power, but an even more impressive turbo lag...I asked the salesman if it had a problem during my test drive and he said that's just the way they were.
Passat wagon with a V6 left me totally cold.
That generation of Forester (talking ~2005 here) didn't impress me and had a huge hump in the middle of the back seat that would have forced us to put the child seat on one side...less safe, no way!
Magnum V8 was really close, but just wasn't actually fun to drive even with the power. There were others I'd have to think really hard about to remember...
I drove that Toyota and it was just "WOW" right from the start!
That's why I stuck around for the crummy treatment...

I had actually more or less settled on an Acura RDX last time I was shopping, but I drove the FXT on a whim and liked it.
My Acura salesman was fantastic, but when it got to the point of having my trade in (RAV6) evaluated the sales manager got involved.
He told me that he would rather not deal with my trade because it was an inferior vehicle and nobody would be interested in it, but he'd think about it as a favor to me. Offered me $1500 less than the Subaru dealer, but he was kind of stuck on the RDX's price because I had already gotten a number from the salesman. The Subie dealer gave me a good hunk off sticker as well as the better trade value without arm twisting either way.
Talking with the sales manager went downhill from there and I just told him he was wasting my time, collected my family, and walked out. He told me when I was leaving that Subaru was a garbage brand and I'd be stupid to buy one. I got 150kmiles out of my (gutless) Outback and knew different.
I emailed the salesman later on and thanked him for all his help, but told him straight out that his manager had lost him a sale. The poor guy replied that he didn't like the way that man talked to me, either. I think maybe the manager had a beef with the salesman and blew the sale for him on purpose!!
I think I would have enjoyed driving the V6 RDX a little more than the turbo 4 FXT, but I think it's a given that the AWD system in the Subaru is superior...Acura had just changed the RDX to the questionable system used in the CR-V at the time (the one a Swedish car mag wrote could not really be considered AWD) and I was a little concerned about that even while shopping. The salesman also told me he felt that Acura was short sighted in not keeping the good AWD system used in the MDX in the new RDX.

I would have saved $3k on my IS if my wife is not picky about the color combination (ext / int). As a result I do not let her buy another car for quite a while because "she ordered what she wanted", and I will not take over her car until at least 10 years. I think my FIL overpaid for a Camry by 7-10k too (XSE hybrid with no roof, grey on silver, etc), it must be in the genes.

I now just prey on dealers with leftover models from last year, and drive far for it.

Mercedes is actually great with European delivery. You get 7% off MSRP and some dealers will discount a bit more so you could end up with 10-12% off MSRP. Plus Mercedes doesn't charge the destination charge if you pick it up in Germany so it's almost another 1-2% off MSRP.
