If he was driving a Chevy truck,he must be desparate for money...between the gas bills and saving up for the repairs thats coming...

yea Leaky,
I know what you are talking about.... but I'm just not used to it.. that's all. I give classmates my couch if they need a place to stay, rides to others that would have to walk home when it's raining, change a tire WITHOUT thinking how much am I going to get from this person, I volunteer when I can, I give blood often-saving the lives of many people.. I changed a tire on a parapaligic's (sp) truck when it was 105* and he called to have it changed and they told him it would be over an hour for them to get there.. I had been working outside and covered in dirty, grease and smelled like horse scrap because I was cleaning stalls.. he thanked me and I jumped in my car to leave and he offered to buy me lunch, which I accepted... but was not expecting...
I know I am wired different than most people and I see why

No, a chevy truck..as previously stated. and for the most part I find "those" guys fairly arrogant.. along with ram drivers.. around here they think they are owed something.. even act like it.. Ok they are owed a free tow when their pos breaks down and parts to fix it..

I know you do not understand why these people act like they do. it has been a trend all over the country it seems. just seeing what you are typing I am going to say that you are 100% correct and should not change your views on helping people. people like you and the others like you on this board are what makes the world a better place. I like you get a good feeling when I know I helped somebody out with them asking me. these people who want to be compensated are all about greed and will never be happy as they always want more. being a good person is what I have taught my kids by example as it does not cost a penny to be kind.

There is a difference between being a good Samaritan, and dealing with corporate stuff. If I walked into the OP's store and asked him for something for free, because I needed it, would my expectation be to get it? No. Would I make the comment of where is the store owners morals? No.

Last I checked, possession is 9/10ths of the law.

Is it the "right" thing to do, to return it? Probably. If I lost a phone or wallet or something traceable to me, I'd hope that the finder would return it to me. It is exactly what id do - return it to the owner via reasonable effort to find and contact them. On the other hand, i guess i dont have enough faith in humanity, so I can imagine they would also be annoyed if I didn't compensate them for their hassle and the time/expense they saved me. But this is also a bit different perhaps - why should someone give a freebie to an entity that exists to make money? Isn't business all about creating "value"? Is the return of the item creating value vs having to buy another?

Now on the other hand, if I lost my wallet IN the store, and the store called me because they had it, I'm no sure Id compensate them for it, unless it was a waiter or some other underling.

So it kind of is a double standard, as I see it.

I'd have either told the guy that he is in posession of my property and I'd be reporting him to the police if not returned, or else just say thanks, keep it and scrap it, we're reporting it's loss/theft to the police and so they will be on the lookout. At least in NJ, a DL is required to sell scrap.

I would have tried to shame the guy at least.

"Sir, thanks for your help but good deeds don't equal "compensation".

Today most people won't try and shame people when they "have it coming". I still do. It needs to be done more and seems to be a lost art.

I carry a 12000 pound,40' tow strap and chains in my truck at all times. Daily I'm pulling someone out of the ditch on my commute to my girls place. Last week I pulled over to a ford windstar that had slid out going around a corner. The lady was pretty shook up,3 young kids crying. She indicated that she had already called CAA but the operator informed her that they were experiencing a a high volume of calls due to slippery conditions.
So I put on my gear and dug out the van, hooked up and pulled her out. As I'm undoing my straps the truck shows up.
The driver then tells her he wants 60 from her for showing up since CAA won't cover his time because he didn't pull her out.
She doesn't have any money on her,so the truck tries to block her in,and he is demanding compensation.
This guy was pulling out a car about a mile up the road when I was driving home, but he was trying to make out like he had driven all the way from the city just to extract her.
I got tired of his rant, the lady was visibly scared as this guy was trying to extort money from her.
I told him to get in his truck and leave before there was any trouble to which he came at me and took a swing. I caught him right in the button,he folded, snoring.
I told the lady to call CAA and report this driver, saw her off,and I sat in my truck and waited for the driver to wake up. When he started moving again after about 5 minutes I drove off. I wanted to be sure he wasn't dead.
Anyways I had given the lady one of my business cards in case she was ever in trouble and I was in the area.
Her husband called me,wanting to thank me and wanted to pay me for my time,to which I refused to accept. I didn't stop for money,I stopped to help.
Turns out he is an RCMP. His wife told him what happened.
Anyways tow truck driver is being charged, even though I said it wasn't necessay since I'm sure he will be on a liquid diet for the next few weeks, and he is also unemployed.
If a person is trying to help then let it be that. If a person is doing it for what they THINK they can get then might as well keep driving.

What shame? He would have just taken the thing and walked. Then gone straight to scrap. Who is laughing?

The only shame is how far society has devolved, but it is our own fault. So we should all be shamed. Supporting tv, movies and all the vile behaviors portrayed there is the start of much of it.

Well...after reading this thread, I think that if I DO find a ramp that came loose from a truck, I won't return it. I'll just take it to the scrapyard after running it over with my F-350.

It was a customer who borrowed the truck.. I say, KEEP DRIVING DON'T STOP IF YOU ARE EXPECTING A REWARD "FOR YOUR INCONVIENCE" THAT IS A PRETTY LAME EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING RIGHT THERE. I would have just written it off as theft. It happens..
AGAIN DON'T STOP TO PICK IT UP IF YOU ARE "EXPECTING A REWARD..PLEASE DRIVE AROUND IT..I COULD CARE LEESSSSSSSSSS!

NOW i'm starting to think Jar.. if I found a wallet I'd just take any cash..sell the CC's for cash and throw the wallet in the dumpster... or it I found a diamond wedding ring I'd take it straight to the pawn shop even if it was in someone's family for generations.. who cares.. I want the money...

Why? Why shouldnt people try? Isnt that being industrious?

I have no problem with them trying to get a few bucks for it, nor do I have a problem with them walking and scrapping it if you wont.

Is it sad? Maybe so. But such is society. Is it theft if you lost it and someone else found it?

I think youre getting your panties in a wad over something that isnt really under your control from multiple angles. He who is without sin is the only one who can cast a stone...

As I mentioned before, if I found a wallet, id do what is in my best capability to return it. Ive done exactly that with cellphones before. Id hope that others would return the favor, but IME, they do not (lost an iphone that way, and one time my wife dropped a callphone and the finder had racked up $500 in calls and texts before the phone company realized that what we reported was actually happening).

Its a sad commentary on society, but not everyone has "morals", and in the case of a corporate thing, where the entity that something would be returned to is in existence because of its willingness to charge you for "value" and make money, Im not sure the scenario is exactly the same to most folks. As stated, its kind of a double standard, IMO when it is a business entity.

In a perfect world, everyone would extend to others nice courtesy... But as I recall, OP, you would like to stomp on the throttle and put diesel soot in the faces of prius drivers, so where does courtesy really exist perfectly in the end all anyway?

JH, how many times has your wife left here purse somewhere? Ever left your wallet at the gym? I may "find" it chunk out the DL and plastic.. then it's 9/10ths mine right? Think about the shoe on the other foot...

reread my posts.

I lost my iphone and nobody returned. Ive found cellphones more than once and returned them. Ive found loose cash, which IMO is in my right to keep, and when I found a wallet once, I get it back to the owner.

But it is shortsighted to expect that all have such courtesy, and everyone, everyone, yourself included doesnt extend perfect courtesy all the time. So to expcect it inherently in this situation to me is unfortunately shortsighted. It is a sad reflection on society, but it is what it is.

That would be the smart thing, considering the alternative might be (as in your OP) an accusation that I stole it!
