Good LED backup lights

My Sienna backup lights are working, but super dim. I want to first try some brighter LED bulbs, then if those don't work, I will try adding auxillary backup lights.

The LED bulb market is difficult, with only a few "branded" options and a bunch of mystery options that might burn my car up or they might be brighter and cheaper than the more expensive name-brand ones.

The bulbs are the 921-size little ones.

Coincidentally I just installed these 921 LEDs on a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and it's like having headlights on when you reverse. Helps a lot with the back up camera too.

I think it's important to note the orientation of the bulb relative to the reflector, to ensure maximum spread from the LED emitters. IMO it's more useful to have a wide spread instead of further distance for backing up. This post was very helpful:

I have the Sylvania ones in both my trucks, I think the ZEVO or something like that and they work fantastic. Also put them in the cargo lights and they are great.

After reading the Toyota thread I bought HIR bulbs for about the same as LED would cost 11/each. Supposedly they are even brighter than most LED and also have a better beam shape and spectrum. I'm hoping these will be enough for me because if not, I won't have any circuit capacity to add auxillary lights unless I switch back to LED.

Can you link us to the thread?
I use and am familiar with HIR bulbs, but use them as replacement for like and kind bulbs (same wattage).
What you are doing is taking a 18W bulb and substituting with a 35W bulb. Has there been long term users showing the high wattage and heat is not damaging to the bulb holder and lens?

The link to the bulb test is above in post number 3. Apparently, at least in the Tacoma, people have done plenty of testing and are confident the 35W bulbs are ok. You don't really use backup lights that long normally but people have tested them for long periods. 35W is about 3 amps.

OSRAM makes a 25 watt 500 lumen HIR bulb. I am running long term tests now. So far so good. If I had to pick LED it would be Diode Dynamics.

In my daughter's CRV I put Diode Dynamics. Color Cool White (6000K) Bulb Model XP80 (510 lumens). They work very well. I like that DD actually tests and lists lumens.

I put these in my Accord and my sons Forte. Much better than stock, not as good as the DiodeDynamics. The projector lens on end seems to help.

How's the angle by license plate on Sienna and where is camera? XTR License Plate light works VERY well if it's pretty flat or you can shim some. On my '17 Accord the trunk has a bigger angle so light shoots too high and glares on camera. I need to move it somewhere different like lower fascia when I get time/energy. This is just the XTR touched to battery, there are no street lights by me. Don't mind the crappy driveway, it's worse now  .
