I usually ask my cleaning lady at work to save me the bag of coffee grind to take home. So far I've gotten probably about 50 lb into my garden.

Vermiculite for water retention and a looser soil for roots
Manure that has been processed and bagged and sold in stores for nutrients
Good quality top soil
Do not put in food scraps, as they need to go into a compost pile first for breakdown. You can read about this on internet
You will need to water every few days unless you get rain so prepare for that with location and hoses, etc
Prepare to do some weeding as they seem to get in mine no matter what I have done.
It is a fun hobby most of the time but does take time and effort but the tastes are wonderful

Too cold for that here, although I found a cheap two barrel smoker at ALDI this arv...will probably get one in prep for the season.
been making charcoal (from cardboard and twigs) in my gasifying downdraft charcoal burner (youtube video available on request), and adding it to my raised garden bed/retaining walls in a sort of "terra preta" takeaway, as I want to keep it free draining, but hold moisture, microbes, and nutrients, like the Amazon terraforming that the ancients did.
I've had a "tumble" composter for decades, that I could never get to work here, and this year on a hunch, loaded it with a couple barrels of cardboard charcoal to start with. Even through winter, it's stayed composting, when I've always had problems with it doing anything.
That last point, I've never come across charcoal based compost before...it was a hunch, and it works very very well...should patent it...oops, have told people of my idea, dang.

I reckon you'd do better with charcoal...if you've got a tub, could you have a crack at one with crushed charcoal ?

The Indians in Amazonia have used charcoal as a soil builder for centuries. I use wood ash and food waste dumped into a midden with occasional bags of mowed grass, weeds etc. I sifted 2 cart fulls of its compost and spread it on my 16 x 16 garden.
