Hello all,

I have 2 cars that use the same oil. A Ford Freestyle, and a Mustang GT (5w20, I use Supertech synthetic). I typically put 300-700 miles a year on the Mustang, and change the oil once a year. I'm torn between two options, changing the oil on the Mustang every other year, or using the 300-700 mile oil on the Freestyle for topping off, or even during the next oil change.

It just kills me to get rid of the oil from the Mustang, it is typically still a nice golden brown and looks the same as brand new oil.

What are the thoughts of everyone?

Thanks.

If the oil is good enough for the Freestyle, why isn't it good enough for the Mustang?

Change the 'Stangs oil every two years.

Use the 600-1400 mile Synthetic oil for toping off the Freestyle. Being a synthetic, its still almost new with less than 1500 miles on it. Heck, I have used "Mobil 2" with 5000 miles on it for whole changes (not just top offs) with zero issues.

This. And drive the mustang more, no excuses!

With less than 1500 miles in two years, the oil and its additives would be far from depleted. An oil change every two years would be plenty. The main issue would be to drive the car long enough to get the engine and oil up to operating temp for a min of 15 or so mins before parking it, to prevent moisture build-up. I would discard the used oil, to easy to contaminate it with dust etc. Not worth the few $ saved to try and re-use it. I have a summer use only older car and a bike that see about 1000 miles/year each, they get changes every two years.

There is a guy on here somewhere that uses Mobil 1 in one car then when he changes the oil he puts it in another car and calls it Mobil 2.

Change the oil every 2 years. Then recycle it. You need a really clean drain pan to even think about reusing the oil, and I dont have the time or patience to find/clean a drain pain. My drain pain stays gross, and I wont be cleaning it any time soon.

Again, unless you tell us how you drive it, all advice will be 100% worthless. Track-day miles aren't the same as summer cruising days aren't the same as random short trips to the store, just for a change of pace.

Leave it for at least 3 years then drain it. As long as you are getting the oil up to temp to burn out moisture before putting it up, it can last several years.

I wouldn't mess with putting it in the other vehicle just because as others have said, it's easy to contaminate it with [censored] in the drain pan.

Not that I even begin to owe you and the others who made negative comments an explanation on how I drive my car; I find that sometimes the best response to total ignorance, is total kindness.

First, the word is spelled ridiculous. Correct spelling and grammar goes a long way at how others perceive you.

Second, it took me a long time to buy this car. I have had it since new (2006), actually ordered it so I could get it optioned exactly how I wanted it.

Third, every year I save up and buy parts for it, and then during the winter I take it apart and put the parts on the car. I have 4 kids, and they love the time spent with me turning wrenches.

Fourth, (see above) I have four kids; the opportunity to drive the car doesn't always pan out and I find it unfair to leave one of my kids at home with my wife while I take the other's for a joy ride. I'm also not selfish enough to take it out for a joy ride myself and leave my wife and kids at home.

Fifth, every one of my kids loves the car, and they all have hopes and dreams of driving it one day. I plan to fulfill those hopes and dreams by keeping the car in top condition and teaching them all to drive in it (yes, it's a stick).

Sixth, it's my car to drive however I please.

Finally, to the other helpful members that inquired about how I drive the car (my fault, should have included that to begin with). I do not take it out unless I can put over 50 miles on it. Most of the time I take it out it gets over 100 miles that day. Most miles are driven locally through the scenic back roads. It is a Mustang GT, so I enjoy the performance when opportunity presents itself. The car also sees a few passes down the 1/4 mile at my local drag strip each year.

All that being said, I think I'll change the oil every two years. Maybe I'll take one of those samples and send it to Blackstone for analysis and possibly go three years.

Thanks to all those that provided useful answers.

Well said sir! And yes, I too noticed the spelling... pretty funny, if you're going to criticize, better at least spell it properly!
