We use dyno emissions inspection systems here and I have never heard of any engines or transmissions getting ruined.

What speed are they dyno at? Here in CA we dyno at 15mph and 25mph.

And when the OEMs know that they aren't going to be checked up on year after year, what will happen to the quality of the installed components ?
Surely a ECU can be programed to not allow normal operation of a vehicle if emmisions paramiters are out of a margin. This would pretty much require corrections to take place with out big brother.

The cars have improved so much that the emissions tests have become obsolete. Maybe they need to tighten the thresholds to ULEV or SULEV standards so that people don't think that they are a rip-off.

This doesn't account for tampering. It's a small percentage, but every once in a while I see a "tuner car" that's running so rich that the bumper above the [censored] can is black.
