Good cold winter oil for 2003 Envoy?

FWIW, PP has had great used oil analysis here, Terry likes it, and it did really well in my Accords last winter, where we had two weeks where it was 0F or below each morning. One of the Accords (the one I drive, of course) sat outside, and it started right up with no worrying noises. I'd personally go with PP.

Did you see the Honda S2000 post where the mfr prefers 5w30 or 5w-40 for temps 0f and colder? If Honda specs 5w-40 for that ultra high performance engine in very cold temps, it will also be a good cold winter oil for your Envoy. Is Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 available in Edmonton?

What engine, the Atlas/Vortec 4.2L I6 or the V8? I can't speak for the V8, but the I6 holds 7qts. I wouldn't run an expensive synthetic unless your friend intended to follow the OLM or go beyond. Having owned a 2005 Trailblazer 4.2L, I'd run a conventional 5w-20 in it due to their miserable MPG's, but to reduce confusion for your friend, it's probably best to stick with the 5w30 that's spec'd for these engines.

Thanks for the responses and good suggestions on the Pennzoil Platinum. Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 is available in Edmonton, but I'd really like to use the thinnest oil possibly in his engine. Since Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 is on sale, that's a definite possibility.

His engine is the 4.2 I6 and the mileage is quite brutal from what he's told me. As for a conventional 5w20, I know the Motorcraft 5w20 is recommended, but are there any other 5w20's that will allow longer OCI's?

I'll have to look into the Amsoil 0w20 as I'm thinking it could go 10k miles...are there any other thin oils that could go this long?

The Amsoil 0w30 oil can go longer than 10k, so can the HDD 5w30.

My used oil analysis on my Chev Avalanche tell me that 4800 miles in the Calgary winter climate is too long, and that's on German Castrol Syntec 0w-30. It can do 7k miles in the summer without breaking a sweat. Edmonton's winter climate is dramatically more severe than Calgary's (I have lived in both places), and I seriously doubt it would be advisable to run any oil 10k miles unless your friend can put those miles on in a few months.

So our winter's really strain a good oil I guess. Good to know and I'll have to take that into account. We'll see how much he wants to spend and how often he wants to change it.

No way to know. You're friend would have to run a used oil analysis or 3 on the same oil for his Envoy based on his specific usage of the truck. For your average driver, I'd bet any 'certified' 5w-20 would do fine in the Atlas 4.2L. I've never seen a bad used oil analysis on this engine with 5w30 and highly doubt a 5w-20 would show anything other than great results.

5W's are only guaranteed pumpable down to -35C. I'd recommend a 0W.

Mobil 1 is probably a bit thinner at -40, but it does not have the 12 TBN.

Ended up going with an Amsoil 5w30, can't remember which one though.
