Most people up here are using 5W30 conventional and their vehicles start just fine.

I'd definitely switch to a 0W-20 oil as they are MUCH lighter than a typical 5W-20 like Pennzoil Platinum.
For example the Toyota, Honda and Castrol Edge 0W-20's will be 40% lighter at 0C and progressive more so as the temp's drop. Even at room temp' these oils are 25% lighter than Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20.

Now for extreme cold temp's; -40 degrees, PAO based Mobil 1 0W-20 is the champ with a MRV of 10,400cP.
