good advice; keep your old refrigerator

My current 2017 Chevy Traverse with its 5100 pound tow rating because we tow a boat has 85,000 miles on it and never needed a repair

"My last 2008 Dodge Durango never needed repair for 150,000 miles"
2012 Mazda...12 full years without a repair.
My current 2017 Chevy Traverse, 8 years old and 85,000 and "Never Needed A Repair"

You do realize you somewhat made the argument for older vehicles, right?
That said, you've had an outstanding run there.

Others have had to look to Lemon Laws.

I have a family member nephew who seems to have used NY's lemon law a number of times. 🙃 domestic and foreign. They are kind of wealthy and gets the latest greatest newest vehicles that have issues at times. Mostly first year models. I think one was the Mustang EV (even though he accepted a 2nd new one) The other either a VW Atlas or Kia Telluride. I think it was the VW and a disaster but in all fairness not sure. This was some years back, the family is now in a much higher vehicle class.

I guess I didnt think the 2017 Traverse was older but wow, years pass by quickly. My wife now has a new 2025 Equinox. Little nervous about that, first year production run of a redesign and not only that but one of the first production runs as we bought it in Nov 2024

I don’t blame you. I look at it like this. I buy what I like and past problems with one particular issue at one period of time doesn’t stop me.
If it did, we would never buy any product or automobile.

I know the period of time with compressor issues and I know what the cause was. Those times passed. So it works for me and now I have a 10 year warranty on the LG 5 years labor where GE only offers a one year warranty.
Though this doesn’t matter as much, but by not buying GE, I’m not supporting China. The thing is the GE did not come close to matching the features of the LG.
The only features I needed were to stay cold and have an ice maker. Our LG is a bottom freezer with an ice maker that just dumps into a bin, no dispenser for ice or water (that was another $1400 and doubled the price). I can fill my glass with water from the sink 3 feet away for $1400.
We haven't gotten the repaired LG back yet but I hope they have fixed the compressor issues with the replacement compressor by now. I heard GE was made in China now, but just going by what the repair guy said. I hopefully won't have to buy a new one for a few more years.

Yeah, our LG refrigerator is a 2022 side-by-side counter, depth model with indoor ice and water.
For a couple years, they were multiple problems with the LG design. Hope it works out for you.

By no means are all GE appliances made in China. But GE appliances is now owned by a Chinese corporation called Haier since 2016.
I was surprised that the refrigerator we just bought my daughter. Only has a one year warranty on everything including the compressor.
The reason we purchased the GE was it had to be a counter depth that the handles would come off the door to get it into her kitchen.

Real estate square footage is the most expensive thing in 2025. I do agree about that 30 year old fridge is going to outlast the new one you buy today though.

I bought a 30 year old used fridge off a charity 10 years ago and it is still running in my rental. The new one we install in another rental died after 8 years.

I remember all the consumer grade fridges we bought for rental were all about 1 year warranty regardless of brands. The only exception is if we buy from IKEA they have 5 years. I don't trust Korean's warranty whether they are cars or fridges or washing machines, they basically just drag out till you give up and buy another one.

Not sure how different GE is after Haier bought them, but so far the new one we bought for rentals work about the same as before in the same price range (we buy the most boring cheap stuff like top and bottom mostly for the rentals). I am not saying they never cut quality because everyone else is doing the same (Whirlpool for example), but they aren't worse than those guys. I know people with Haier fridges and they didn't die after just a few years, but their biggest complain tends to be them being loud as heck or not very space efficient (have thick walls etc).

If I want durability I probably would buy from Costco or IKEA, and if they die too soon I would return to Costco (if it is a well known manufacturing defect they don't fix on time) or just knowing that IKEA have me covered for 5 years.

Not exactly a low volume model. They sold 43,000 of them last year. That’s only 1000 less than the Mustang actually
The Corvette might as well be a bass boat, for how many are used as a replacement for a Chevy Malibu.... Also they made 43000 last year, 3 of them are sitting at my local dealer, and one is getting a few hard test drive miles on it, but still there. They do sound pretty nice though, as the one I saw was hitting the rev limiter in the first 3 gears, about 400 yrds after they left the lot...

100% true story to follow but might be hard to believe.
Sibling called me last night (I know a fair amount about refrigeration, all kinds, another story though) The week before they replaced their much loved Whirlpool refrigerator. French door, in door ice etc. Not surprisingly this sibling lets say, doesnt like "change". SO being in the comfort zone and liking this Whirlpool for some many years (12) they went out and bought the same model (I assume in looks and function only) Also got a great sale price (I THINK Best Buy)

They are so upset. when it was delivered last week, upon start up it did make a loud noise. They even called Best Buy to replace it. You only have 48 hours to request a replacement, after that you are stuck with it and its a warranty issue (that sucks). However the noise stopped the very first day and was working fine so they told Best Buy to forget about having it returned.

Anyway, last nights call to me was they came home yesterday after being out all day and the refrigerator section was 29 degrees. Everything frozen. The Digital temp was set at 37. He did try a restart of the refrigerator, last I knew same problem.
So anyway, now they are stuck dealing with Whirlpool warranty service. Im not so sure how much fight they have but if there is a record of their call to Best Buy I would try to get them to take it back. However who knows where that would end up.
I'll update if it started working after powering it down and back up. But he promised to text me if it did and I have not heard back.

@PandaBear update -
He just contacted me, after repowering the refrigerator last night it seems to be working ok today. Now is the time you hope it is a "one off" Time will tell. He also checked codes and it didnt show any issue with the thermostat
