I am really excited... My girlfriend and I decided to go here for our vacation this year, versus Orlando, FL or California... The funny thing is, the cost is about the same. We had booked through expedia and for 8 nights on the Kauai island is $1100 with taxes, flight, hotel. To go to Orlando alone it would have been $400 for flight, $600 for hotel and park tickets and such. So really, why not do something different and crazy for a bit more. Never been anywhere like Hawaii before!

We are going in January right before I go back to classes for the semester. Kauai looks so beautiful, and I cant wait to loaf and do little to nothing on the beaches, walk the trails and see the sights.

Another exciting aspect (being an aviation fan) are the new planes I will be flying on... Having never flown anywhere but Florida and Atlanta, have only been on 737/717/A321 and such. I get to experience a 777, 767-300 and 757-200 along the way. Very excited for that! Only downfall are the very long flights. I get reckless on 3hr trips!

Any tips/hints for staying on Kauai for those who have been?

The 757 is a power monster! That baby climbs like no ones business. Very nice aircraft, I hope to fly one some day. That's not bad for everything, GREAT catch! Hope you have a blast.

I've never been but have spent time in Guam, don't forget sunblock even if you aren't going to the beach. When you do go to the beach be careful of the undertow. Other than that just have fun. Take lots of pictures, these trips are expensive so you won't get too many more chances for photos.

Well, I do photography as a side hobby so will be taking plenty of photos... I did not buy $5,000+ in equipment to not take it with me to things like this!

I am really excited for the 777... Never been on a "heavy" and will be my first... Flying from Cleveland to Chicago on an RJ 145 I believe, then 777 all the way to Honolulu. From Honolulu it is a quick flight on a 717 to Kauai.

On the way home, it is a 757-200 from Kauai to San Fran... San Fran to Chicago is the 767-300 and a A320 from Chicago back to Cleveland. Nice mix of birds (and airports!). I love to explore new ones. Sadly our layover in San Fran is only 50 minutes so not have much time at all to explore.

Getting out of Cleveland in January to Hawaii would be excellent. I never been to Hawaii, but I know in January I do a lot of daydreaming about warm, sunny weather, palm trees and beaches. I'm also a fan of Magnum PI lol. I need to take that trip some time. I also find airports interesting and exciting.

The thing about Fl is if you have the vacation time you can drive there and with two or more people and not having to get a rental it is cheaper than flying.

Beautiful island. You will be VERY impressed with it. Depending on the types of subjects you enjoy, you will have hundreds of ample photo's to take. Tropical flowers (macro), vistas, sunny shores, many interesting people, etc. Be sure to see Waimea Canyon, Poipu Beach, Lumahi Beach, and take the trails north out Ke'e Beach (I think I've got those names right).
The airport is even pleasant. Don't let Honolulu turn you off when you first land. It's a big airport and fairly typical. When you fly about the islands you will be stunned by the beauty just looking out your window.
Get up early while you're there and stay up late.....don't waste any time seeing stuff.

The highest percentage of Californian on long vacation (a week or longer) all year is Hawaii, that tells how beautiful Hawaii is. On short vacation/break we go to Vegas.

I never been to Kauai but had vacations in Maui and Big Island. They are called Paradises and it seems true.

How did you get that price? We are going in a week and are paying more than $1500 per person for Waikiki and Big Island from Boston.

Kauai is breathtaking, we went there about ten years ago. You will love it.

Vikas,

We booked through Expedia and did the hotel/flight together. Flight alone was like $800 but with hotel for 8 nights booked together was like $1080 or something per person. Saved a few hundred by putting together.

Rental car we will just use priceline and keep trying very low rates until we snag something. For atlanta, we were able to get like $8 a day there, which was great. Our car was brand new, 6 miles or something like that (versa).
