of course it's made in China, and the quality control there is way better, workers are not all drunk with hooch, coming in with hangovers on monday, booking off early on friday. if you make a mistake in China, they send you to prison. if you complain about that, then you get to "volunteer" for the next kidney donation transplant. i'd buy cars made in China too.

there is no $2000 premium built in to cover workers health care, because in China, if you get sick, you go home. And then either you get better, or you die. what? it's the same over here too?

I'm confused. I work 39.99 hours a week so i don't get health insurance either. Something about an out of state company doing business in California.

I was recently in Shenzhen (three times). There were quite a few Buick's on the road. There were Chevy Cruize's aplenty as well. Ford products were well represented. I saw no Chrysler products however.

I think that the Buick's numbered close to Toyota's representation.

Lots of VW Santa Fe's as well. Most cabs were Santa Fe's. The VW Santa Fe appears to fill the role in China that the Crown Vic does in the USA.

I was quite surprised to see the US brands so well represented in China.

Of all the vehicles I rode in while in China none had an automatic transmission. Taxi's cut their engines at stoplights. All to save fuel I guess.

I have to admit, that was a good one...

For some reason, the Chinese LOVE Buicks... Very much a prized status symbol.

That may be a lot of the reason why Buick is still with us, and Pontiac and Saturn aren't.

Here's a good explanation: Why The Chinese Love Buicks

Quote:
The Chinese never forgot Buick's reputation for styling and performance...

Sun Yat-sen, China's first president, took his first automobile ride in a 1912 Buick. And two Buicks bought by China's last emperor, Pu Yi, in 1924 were the first cars owned by an emperor and the first to enter the Forbidden City.

A Buick advertisement in 1930 claimed one in every six cars in China was a Buick, and that "Buick owners are mostly the leading men in China."

Sorry

a little.

I have some limited experience with China's health care system.
The costs are very reasonable. $28.00 US for an ER visit regarding an earache.(without insurance)
They used IV therapy to treat this !!

I had relief in less than two hours.

My Chinese wife says her medical costs have only a 10 Percent copay.
I don't know the details; but she has some form of medical insurance.
A good working class wage in China amounts to around $1500 US per month.
Food and housing costs are about 1/3 what they are in NC. There are people working in the lower class jobs that make $300 US per month.

IMHO: We have some things to learn; They don't put up with any nonsense in China.
Shenzhen has many "western" characteristics.
Stupidity however is not tolerated.
For instance crossing the street against the traffic light can be fatal and it will be your fault!

With automated assembly, "country of origin" looses a lot of it's meaning.
The initial engineering, and process control are more important regarding quality.
GM can engineer some good automotive technology when it sets it's mind to it.
So can others Of course.

What is a VW Santa Fe? Did you mean VW Santana?

Buick needs to step up their product placement, have Hasselhoff drive on in "Baywatch", seriously! Or all the girls on "Melrose Place".

We export lots of banal TV and the world laps it up.

Wouldn't that be the ultimate example of a guy moving through the GM brands, as they envisioned so long ago. He starts out driving a sporty Pontiac, and years later, ends up in a respectable Buick. Cadillac next...

China will be making BIG changes soon due to its growth.

Everyone seems to forget this is the same Government that ran tanks over their own kids in Tianemen (sp) Square.

Politics....

and a trip wire subject.

I will comment once on this and leave politics alone on this thread.

We are quite similar in some limited ways. Remember Kent state? Ruby ridge. Etc?

One of China's largest problems now is pollution. I have witnessed smog that limited visibility to considerably less than one mile in Hengyang.
I also see that they have a massive clean up effort underway. The old dirty industries are being replaced with "green" technologies as fast as they can.
There is construction and renovation going on at a feverish pace. The pace and scope of construction beats any thing I have ever seen in the USA.

As for labor:
I can only speak to the Cities I have visited.
In Hengyang, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou it appears that most Chinese under 40 are upwardly mobile, and are living what would be a middle class livelihood in the USA.
I am sure that outlying areas are quite different.

In Shenzhen especially I am impressed by the number of new vehicles on the roads. Most of these are GM or Ford.
I wonder how their credit system works? In due time I will find out.

Well they've got the money...or soon will.
Countries that manufacture always ascend, "service economies" descend.
