Hey guys I just found this website a few days ago. So far I am very impressed with all the knowledge and information on here. I am trying to soak up as much of it as I can. I am originally from Texas and am living here for a few years so this cold weather is kind of different for me. I know some of the basics about oil weight kinda. The lower the W the more it flows right. But I am not sure how exactly the second number affects the oil temperature rating. I currently driving a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3l with 68975 miles on it.It was a safety supervisors truck so it saw alot of hiway miles and some extra idleing. The oil was changed fairly regularly it looks to me. Right now I have Quaker State peak performance 5w30 in it. I am wanting to go with one of the heavy duty oils like the Delo 400 syn 5W-40. It calls for a 5w30 though I think this will be okay right? Would you recommend this or something else?

The lower the W, the better it flows *at low temperature*. At -30 degrees, 0W30 will be flowing much better at startup than 10W30. Back in Texas, there wouldn't be much difference because the temperature is always fairly high. (I won't say there is no difference because I know someone will quote chapter and verse from their favorite oil report and point out exactly what the difference is. Consider myself told.)
The second number is how well it flows at operating temperature, so whether you're in Calgary or Texas doesn't really matter.
Any particular reason you want to move up to 5W40?
I was looking at the 5W40 Because it is a HDEO and synthetic. I kinda want this but if you recommend something else please tell me. Like maybe 0W30 would be more inline, and should I use a winter oil and a summer oil up here? I wanted the synthetic for longevity etc. and the HDEO because I have read several post about it's benefits. I may not be too severe with my truck but I do like to work it hard sometimes or at least know I can. Thanks for the welcome by the way.
Just remember that HDEO oils can MAYBE harm your catalytic converter.
How about Esso XD3 0w30. It's a HDEO synthetic. Many Canucks favor it and the price is right.
Sounds like a good oil. Anyone have any info on it? Should I use 0w30 all year?
Use the search function (near top of the screen) and you can look for previous discussions of XD-3 or any other oil you want. I haven't used it myself but it seems to be highly regarded.
