Gmail or yahoo?

I think he's referring to the actual email address. You can change your name in gmail settings but that won't change your email address.

It's one reason I got my email address back in 2004, was able to get the name I wanted as they all hadn't been taken up yet. Only drawback is that you get a lot of spam and also people with similar names to you end up sending you mail.
Oops I see. You meant the actual address - johndoe123@gmail…..

No. There are loads of email providers. Why those two spam infested companies?
Those are basically some of the top email providers out there and everyone knows them so you don't have to spell out gmail or yahoo when giving out your email address. I suppose a few other ones that are easy would be aol or hotmail/outlook.

G for being more proactive with security, offering better multi-factor authentication options, and have the best native antivirus and anti-spam scanners.

Yahoo has far too many compromises in their history and didn't care how simple a password you used until recently. It's only after they've been breached several times that they are starting to take security a little more seriously.

As for Proton, they've been in the news recently for giving up a customer's privacy due to court order and have thus had to amend their policy:

I have both but Gmail is used the most. I've had Yahoo for decades but it is antiquated. Yahoo never learns...it still sends items to the spam folder that are legit emails. I've corrected it thousands of time but it still does it.

G
Y does not offer anything, as far as I am aware, above and beyond what G does; and G's offering integrates conveniently with the rest of their impressive complement of services (Calendar, Docs, etc.)

Both's privacy policies are crafted to more effectively advertise to you.

ProtonMail is not the privacy champion many make it out to be.

I was with yahoo from 1999 until about 2005 when they unceremoniously kicked me out and deactivated my email account. After not being able to log in, I contacted yahoo to see what happened. They told me I violated their terms of service. They wouldn't tell me what I did. I've been boycotting them ever since. I joined gmail back when it was in some sort of beta testing and you needed an invite to sign up.

G mail spam goes in different folder.

Is this sarcasm?
To be fair, for work people use mostly instant messengers like Team and Slack these days for most fast response things. However we still need email for a lot of automated stuff, filter if you want to not read it, legal liability announcement, etc. So yes we still receive 200 emails a day so we can filter 195 of them to spam right away and read only 5.

For personal use yes we still need them on a lot of stuff, not because people want to write one email to you or others but this is the most common standardized communication you can send to 30 people or so at a time (like teacher send to parents), or when you sign up for something you know they will send you notification when things are shipped or processed, etc.

Now cell phone calls, unless FCC do something quick 99% of phone calls would be gone in 5 years because of spam and scam.

I’ve got both. I also have many other emails too. I get so many emails that I don’t want all of them coming to my main account.

Some I use just for tool stuff. Some I use for prank emailing friends etc. At least with iPhone you don’t have to worry about the email notifications coming across the top of the screen like you do with Android that gets annoying as heck.

You can turn notifications off in Android and IOS. You can also configure notification banners in IOS.
